R. Kelly’s Daughter Alleges Childhood Abuse By Singer In New Documentary: ‘I Didn’t Even Want To Believe That It Happened’

As a survivor of abuse and a former fan of R. Kelly, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as I hear about his daughter Baku Abi’s heart-wrenching story. Having gone through similar experiences myself, I know too well the fear, confusion, and shame that come with being silenced and manipulated by those we should be able to trust.

In a groundbreaking revelation, R. Kelly’s daughter, Baku Abi, is speaking out publicly for the first time about the distressing experiences of alleged abuse she endured as a child at the hands of her father. The concluding moments of TVEI Streaming Network’s latest two-episode documentary disclose that Abi, now 26, was victimized by the musician when she was still a child, and she initially reported this to her mother Andrea in 2009, when she was just ten years old.

In the opening chapter of this compelling documentary now available for streaming, I, Abi, share a deeply personal story. He was an integral part of my life, and when the unimaginable occurred, I found myself unwilling to accept the reality. It took me a long time to grasp that someone whom I considered close could inflict such pain upon me, despite his flaws. The fear that gripped me was so profound that I hesitated to confide in anyone, not even my own mother.

As someone who goes by Abi (formerly known as Joann Kelly), according to People, I don’t delve deeply into the alleged abuse in the initial episode of our show. Yet, I express my firm belief that a correctional facility, such as a jail, would be an appropriate place for a 57-year-old Kelly, given my own personal background.

In case you’re unaware, Kelly received a 20-year sentence for child pornography and luring minors for sexual acts in February 2023. A year prior to that, he was given a 30-year sentence for racketeering and human trafficking. At present, he is serving 19 years of the two sentences simultaneously. His earliest possible release date is 2045.

In the second episode of the documented series, as reported in the referenced publication, Abi remembers being awakened by Kelly touching her. Since she was around 8 or 9 years old at the time, Abi didn’t know how to respond, so she chose to stay still and feign sleep.

Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s lawyer, told People that Kelly strongly refutes these accusations. Similar claims were made by his former wife in the past, which were looked into by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and found to be baseless. Remarkably, the producers of the documentary did not contact Kelly to let him respond to the allegations raised by his daughter.

R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter‘s Journey chronicles the family’s struggle to adjust following his arrest and sentencing. It delves into Abi’s journey as she prepares for motherhood, having previously shared in the series that while living under her father’s influence, she battled with thoughts of suicide.

Simultaneously, Robert Jr. and Joah Kelly, two of R. Kelly’s children, express in the documentary that they are content with their father’s verdict.

Should you find yourself in a difficult situation involving issues such as assault, abuse, or suicidal feelings, don’t hesitate to seek help from a local mental health professional, non-governmental organization, or confide in someone you trust. There are numerous resources available for this purpose, including helplines specifically designed to assist.
