The name of Berkshire Hathaway still carries a certain weight, doesn’t it? A ghost of prudence in a market prone to fits of enthusiasm. Though the hand that once steered the ship has largely withdrawn, the echoes of Mr. Buffett’s choices linger, a curious blend of calculation and, perhaps, a touch of hope. One wonders if even he, observing the currents now, would feel quite the same certainty.
There are selections from that portfolio, naturally, that invite a closer look. Not as declarations of infallible wisdom, mind you, but as opportunities, however muted, to participate in the slow, inevitable turning of the wheel. And then there are others…well, one learns to accept that even the most seasoned investors are not immune to the quiet disappointments that life invariably offers.
American Express: A Measured Comfort
Apple remains the cornerstone, a predictable success. But it is American Express, creeping up as the second-largest holding at just over $47 billion, that holds a certain appeal. The stock has, predictably, experienced a recent dip, nearly 20% from its peak. The anxieties are familiar – a slowing economy, the weight of debt, the ever-present fear of defaults. U.S. household debt now stands at a record $18.8 trillion, a figure that feels less like a statistic and more like a premonition.
Yet, Amex possesses a certain resilience. It caters, shall we say, to a clientele less burdened by immediate hardship. Luxury spending, it seems, continues to hold up, growing 15% year over year. A curious observation, isn’t it? That even as the tide recedes, some boats remain afloat. This pullback, then, may prove to be a temporary inconvenience, a fleeting moment of uncertainty in an otherwise steady current. One shouldn’t expect miracles, of course. But a modest return, a quiet comfort, is not entirely out of the question.
Constellation Brands: The Lingering Taste
Constellation Brands, the maker of Corona and Modelo, hasn’t fared quite as well. Shares have languished, and the broader trend in alcohol consumption is…discouraging. Gallup reports a decline in regular drinkers, a multidecade low of 54%. One wonders if people are simply discovering other ways to numb the tedium.
But the business of spirits is, after all, cyclical. A period of restraint will inevitably give way to a resurgence, perhaps when anxieties ease and wallets open a little wider. Constellation, too, has been undergoing a quiet transformation, shedding less profitable brands and preparing for a new direction. The incoming CEO, Mr. Fink, may well bring a fresh perspective. Or he may simply discover that some problems are impervious to management expertise. Time, as always, will tell. But a patient investor might find a glimmer of hope in this subdued landscape.
DaVita: A Slow Fade
Not every choice, however, proves to be a fortunate one. DaVita, the kidney dialysis provider, stands as a gentle reminder of that truth. The initial investment, made in 2011, seemed promising enough – strong demand, reasonable reimbursement rates. But the landscape has shifted. Revenue has grown modestly, 5% year over year, but net income is down 17%. A microcosm, really, of the challenges facing the entire healthcare industry – rising costs, squeezed margins, and the relentless pressure to do more with less.
Berkshire Hathaway has been quietly exiting this position for some time now, a gradual withdrawal that speaks volumes. Mr. Abel, the new CEO, seems content to continue that course. It is not a dramatic abandonment, not a public declaration of failure. Simply a recognition that some investments, however well-intentioned, eventually run their course. And so, DaVita fades into the background, a quiet testament to the impermanence of all things. The market, of course, will move on, seeking new opportunities, new illusions. And life, with its endless cycle of hope and disappointment, will continue, as it always does.
