Quentin Tarantino Reveals the One Performance That Knocked Him Out and Changed Cinema

Quentin Tarantino is well-known for talking about the movies he loves, and he recently shared a new favorite that really impressed him. On a recent podcast, the famous director described a performance he found absolutely amazing.

George C. Scott gives a fantastic performance in Arthur Hiller’s 1971 satire, The Hospital. Quentin Tarantino recently rewatched the film with Roger Avery and said it gave him a fresh perspective, even though he’d seen it before.

Tarantino shared that he absolutely loved the film The Hospital, saying it “knocked me out.”

The director went beyond simply praising Scott’s work, declaring it among the very best in the field. He stated, “I believe George C. Scott delivers one of the greatest performances I’ve ever witnessed.”

I recently watched a film with a script by the incredible Paddy Chayefsky – he even won an Oscar for it! It centers around Dr. Herbert Bock, and honestly, his life is just falling apart, both at work and personally. It’s a really compelling story of a man losing control.

Bock is dealing with a failing marriage and distant children, all while trying to run a hospital where staff members are unexpectedly dying. This realistic depiction of a man under immense pressure is what particularly struck the director of Pulp Fiction.

Tarantino recently shared how his views have changed over time. He recalled feeling a sense of understanding about something even as a child, even if he didn’t fully grasp the details. Now, looking back with more life experience, he feels a particular quote – ‘Most men end their lives in anguish’ – rings true.

The director explained that the character’s inner turmoil resonates with him deeply now. He admitted, “There’s something about George C. Scott’s character, a raw honesty, that’s heartbreaking when you get older. I really see a part of myself in him at this point in my life.”

The performance felt deeply personal, as if it connected the film to events in Tarantino’s own life. He explained that the pain expressed in the role resonated with him in a way it wouldn’t have at any other point in his life.

He finished his enthusiastic review by saying he was deeply impressed with both the writing and the performances. He explained, “Now that I’m at the right point in my life, I think this is one of the best characters and performances I’ve ever experienced.”

George C. Scott, who died in 1999, is remembered as one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and unconventional stars. He’s particularly well-known for famously rejecting his Best Actor Oscar for Patton, calling the awards show a superficial and ostentatious event.

Even later in his career, Scott continued to work in movies and TV, notably giving a frightening performance in The Exorcist III and appearing in the 1997 version of 12 Angry Men. He’s remembered for inspiring actors who play complicated, tough characters with hidden emotional depths.

The 1970s film The Hospital is a classic example of the “New Hollywood” movement, famous for its sarcastic tone and clever writing. It featured Diana Rigg, who became popular with a new audience years later for playing Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.

Quentin Tarantino is nearing the end of his celebrated directing career. Although he cancelled his project, The Movie Critic, everyone is excited to find out what his tenth and final movie will be.
