Quentin Tarantino is known for loving daring movies, and Lars von Trier’s 2003 film, Dogville, is still one of his favorites.
Looking back at films he loved from 1992 to 2009, Tarantino praised a movie starring Nicole Kidman as a storytelling triumph. He was especially impressed by its unusual setting – a simple soundstage with streets drawn in chalk – which he believed made the film more thought-provoking.
Quentin Tarantino believes the film’s screenplay is exceptionally well-written, possibly one of the best ever for a movie. He suggested the writing was so strong it felt like more than just a film script. In fact, Tarantino stated that if Lars von Trier had presented the story as a play instead of a movie, it would have likely won a Pulitzer Prize.
As a film buff, I find Dogville to be a really unsettling, but powerful movie. It takes place during the Depression and shows how quickly a seemingly nice town can turn ugly. Nicole Kidman plays Grace, a woman just looking for a safe haven, but the people in Dogville start making more and more demands until they’re basically abusing her. A lot of people thought the film was a harsh criticism of America, but the director, Lars von Trier, has said he was more interested in exploring the darker side of human nature and certain political ideas, rather than making a statement about the country itself.
The director clarified that he isn’t fundamentally opposed to the United States. “It doesn’t make sense to be ‘against’ an entire country,” he told Filmmaker Magazine. While he disagrees with some of America’s foreign policy decisions, such as the war in the Middle East, he believes many Americans share his political views. He even joked that, due to the larger population, he likely agrees with more people in America than in his own country, Denmark.
Nicole Kidman, known for her standout role in Dogville, continues to be a very active actress. In September 2026, she’ll be starring in Practical Magic 2, reuniting her with Sandra Bullock. She’s also filming the mystery thriller Scarpetta with Jamie Lee Curtis, and fans are expecting her to return for the third season of HBO’s Big Little Lies.
