Quentin Tarantino is famous for his exciting and action-packed movies, often featuring intense scenes or dramatic twists on history. Though action was present in his earlier films, he truly embraced the martial arts genre with his 2003 film, Kill Bill.

This action-packed movie tells the story of the Bride, played by Uma Thurman, as she seeks revenge on the group of assassins who wronged her. It’s a visually stunning film that pays homage to classic kung-fu movies from the late 1900s, known for their dramatic fights and over-the-top action.

Quentin Tarantino drew significant inspiration for the lead character in Thurman from Michelle Yeoh, particularly her performance in the 1992 film Police Story 3: Super Cop. Tarantino has often praised the movie, once calling it the source of some of the most amazing stunts ever filmed – even better than those in classic early cinema.

He frequently highlights a scene in the film where Yeoh rides a motorcycle onto a train as a prime example of excellent action filmmaking. Starring Jackie Chan and Yeoh, Super Cop is a beloved classic that cemented Yeoh’s status as a major international action star.

Years after the film was made, Yeoh remembered playfully asking the director why she wasn’t the star of his revenge story. Tarantino jokingly replied that audiences wouldn’t believe Uma Thurman could win in a fight against her.

I’ve always been amazed by how much Quentin Tarantino did for Michelle Yeoh’s career, and it went way beyond just giving her a creative boost. After a really bad injury on the set of ‘The Stunt Woman’ back in ’96, she actually thought she’d broken her back and might never walk again. She was in so much physical and emotional pain, and honestly, I think he helped her get through it and continue acting, which is incredible.

She says Quentin Tarantino’s constant energy helped her through a difficult time, explaining that his genuine love for filmmaking eventually convinced her to keep going. His support made her realize she wasn’t ready to leave the movie business.

Since that defining moment, Michelle Yeoh has become a major Hollywood star, famously being the first Asian woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once. More recently, she’s received praise for her performance as Madame Morrible in the hit movies Wicked and Wicked: For Good.

The celebrated actress continues to thrive, and will be honored with a lifetime achievement award – the Honorary Golden Bear – at February’s Berlin International Film Festival. She’s also starring in the new Amazon Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099, playing a veteran replicant hunter alongside Hunter Schafer.
