Jon Bernthal won’t be reprising his role as the Punisher in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. According to executive producer Sana Amanat in Empire magazine, despite appearing in the first season, Frank Castle won’t be part of the upcoming one.
Despite previous appearances with Daredevil, the Punisher will now star in his own series on Disney+.
Okay, so Marvel’s cooking up another one of their standalone specials – think along the lines of Werewolf by Night or that Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This one’s about an hour long and, if everything goes according to plan, we should be seeing it sometime in 2026. It’s a nice little break from the big cinematic universe stuff, letting them try different things.
Jon Bernthal and director Reinaldo Marcus Green are collaborating on a new installment. Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, with Jason R. Moore returning as Curtis Hoyle. Roe Rancell is also joining the cast. Filming took place in New York over the summer and concluded quickly.
Marvel began developing the special while filming the first season of Born Again. Jon Bernthal had previously discussed ideas for a story centered on the Punisher, and Marvel invited him to contribute to the project. Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming and TV at Marvel Studios, explained that Bernthal deeply connects with the character, who has become one of his most famous roles.
Bernthal is aiming for a special that stays true to the grim and gritty nature of Frank Castle’s character. He’s committed to making it excellent and promises a more intense portrayal of the Punisher – one that doesn’t pull any punches.
A new Punisher series is coming to Disney+ in 2026, likely around the same time as the second season of the Daredevil: Born Again series.
