Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, takes readers on another interstellar adventure in his novel Project Hail Mary. Now, the story is being adapted for the big screen by directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard. Starring Ryan Gosling, the film follows a hesitant astronaut on a critical mission: to save the Sun from fading and taking Earth with it. However, he soon discovers Earth isn’t the only planet in danger, and he meets a strange alien creature he nicknames Rocky while exploring deep space.
The alien, Rocky, looks like a charmingly simple, stone spider – almost like a child’s drawing! And it’s not just a comparison to the character in the original book. This trailer gives us our first look at Rocky, and he’s fantastic! He’s also surprisingly funny, which is a really good sign for the movie. The connection between Ryland and Rocky was the strongest part of the book, so it’s great to see that humor come through.
Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Hüller, is the leader of a crucial, last-ditch effort to save Earth. The trailer offers a good look at Hüller in the role, and she truly embodies the character – she was perfect casting from the start. Even a brief glimpse confirms she’s everything we hoped for.
With actors like Hüller, Gosling, and Rocky, the cast of Project Hail Mary is fantastic. Now, the big question is whether the movie will live up to the high expectations. We’ll know for sure when it hits theaters on March 20, 2026.
