Producer Confirms ‘Uncharted 2’ Is On the Way, But the Wait Could Be a Long One

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Uncharted is one of those rare series that truly captured my heart and imagination. The adventures of Nathan Drake have been an integral part of my gaming life since 2007 when the first game, Drake’s Fortune, was released for the PlayStation consoles.

One of the finest and widely acclaimed video game series ever created is undeniably “Uncharted”. Global enthusiasts have been captivated by the thrilling escapades of protagonist Nathan Drake, immersing themselves in each game, yearning for more, even though the fate of this video game empire remains uncertain at present.

2022 saw the video game leap onto cinema screens with a high-budget film titled “Uncharted”, featuring Tom Holland portraying the youthful Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg taking on the role of his seasoned mentor, Sully.

Despite receiving a mix of positive and negative feedback, as well as criticism over its casting, Sonny remains undeterred and continues to develop a sequel for the movie.

For quite some time now, there’s been talk about Sony developing a sequel featuring Tom Holland reprising his role. However, we haven’t heard much about this movie recently, causing some concern among fans regarding the series’ future. Yet, it appears that fans can rest easy about this project; while it may take some time, it’s still in the works.

The “Uncharted” video game series took off in 2007 with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” a massive success for Naughty Dog. This popular console game, often ranked among the best on PlayStation systems, quickly evolved into a series and, to date, has sold approximately 40 million copies combined – an astounding achievement.

Given the abundance of video game adaptations in recent times, it was only logical for Sony to consider bringing the Uncharted series to the big screen as well. With its cinematic potential and a modern twist on the beloved Indiana Jones character, it seemed like a move that fans might appreciate. And so, we got the 2022 Uncharted movie.

The movie featured Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg portraying younger iterations of Drake and Sully, providing insights into their origins. It grossed $407.1 million against a production cost of $120 million, but fell short of Sony’s anticipated earnings. Critical reception was varied.

The film didn’t excel, yet it fell short in capturing the allure of the initial video games, and the portrayal of the leading characters was widely criticized as unsuitable by both fans and reviewers alike.

Despite this, Sony has affirmed their plans to expand the Uncharted universe into a series or possibly a franchise, with additional movies in development.

It appears that the script for the sequel has been in development over the past year, as confirmed by both Wahlberg and Sony Pictures Entertainment earlier this year. Recently, there’s been another confirmation that work on the sequel is ongoing. However, given Tom Holland’s packed schedule, it might take some time before we get to see the sequel.

Specifically, Deadline spoke with filmmaker Charles Roven regarding his personal background and professional journey, during which they discussed the movie “Uncharted” that he has produced. Here’s what Roven shared about it:

TIMEFRAME QUESTION: Will there be additional Uncharted instalments? Despite the long wait, it’s a well-known franchise with widespread appeal…

GAMER: I’ve got a bit of a hold-up in my gaming schedule, as I’m eagerly awaiting Chris Nolan’s upcoming movie that stars Tom Holland and Zendaya. After that cinematic masterpiece, they’re diving into the world of Spider-Man, which seems to be releasing around the same time or a week later. If it’s anything like their past projects, it could be another blockbuster hit, or as we gamers say, another potential Barbenheimer!

DUE DATE: What a charming chap, Tom Holland! Deadline is part of the Sands Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland, an exciting venture by Avengers co-director Joe Russo and AGBO. The event featured our first celebrity golf tournament, with Tom being the main attraction. Moreover, he appeared in an excellent short film directed by his brother, Harry, which premiered on the opening night. I accompanied Tom for a few holes on the course and conducted a video interview with him before departing.

In the following golf hole, Tom’s friend accidentally hit him with a golf ball, causing him to fall down. Despite Tom claiming he was fine, another friend took him to the hospital. He managed to return later that day, sporting a lump on his head. He joked that if his friend had stayed for one more hole, he would have made sure the footage was uploaded immediately. However, since his friend wasn’t there… Well, now I’m accidentally sharing some secrets with you.

They’re an exceptional family, and I enjoy collaborating with him. I’m eagerly anticipating his role in the upcoming Uncharted. I’m also looking forward to seeing him in American Speed. This tale is a real-life account of these four Whittington brothers [Austin Butler shares screen time with them]. Unfortunately, only one of them, Don, is still alive. However, their two racing achievements remain unmatched by anyone else.

They’re the first brother team to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and they came out of nowhere to win it. And then the third brother ended up joining them, and they became the first three brothers to qualify for the Indy 500, in three separate cars. They had some other really interesting things about their life and how they got to be where they are. It’s a very interesting story.
