Pristine Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom 1960s Comics Going Up for Auction

As a seasoned collector with over three decades of comic book passion under my belt, I can confidently say that this upcoming auction by Heritage Auctions is shaping up to be the event of the year for any Marvel enthusiast. The near-mint condition of Fantastic Four #1 and Marvel Super Heroes #20, combined with the impending Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of the Fantastic Four, has the potential to make these items more valuable than a certain Infinity Stone (though I’d give my left gauntlet for one).

In more contemporary times, the Avengers and X-Men might have taken center stage, but let’s not forget: without the Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics as we know it wouldn’t exist. Launched by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961, the debut of Fantastic Four created quite a stir. It paved the way for a groundbreaking publishing line that revolutionized comics. As reported by Comic Book Resources, a nearly pristine copy of Fantastic Four #1 is set to be auctioned off. This event is part of Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction this autumn. This particular copy boasts a 9.6 Near-Mint grade, making it one of only two copies known to exist in such excellent condition.

In 2022, a copy of The Fantastic Four #1, rated as 9.2, was sold for $1.5 million. This particular copy was auctioned by Heritage Auctions and, given its better condition, they anticipate it will fetch a much higher price. One factor contributing to this is the excitement surrounding the team, with Marvel’s First Family set to debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps next year within the MCU. Led by Pedro Pascal, this upcoming production is expected to boost the team’s popularity even further, potentially driving up the value of Fantastic Four #1 even more.

Besides the vintage Marvel comic book, another one anticipated to fetch a high price at auction is Marvel Super Heroes #20 from 1969. Graded at 9.8, this issue marks Doctor Doom’s first lead role as a character. Although his initial appearance occurred in Fantastic Four #5 back in 1962, this is the debut of him headlining a comic. With Robert Downey Jr. portraying Victor Von Doom, interest in this historic comic has likely grown, potentially leading to a higher selling price. More Marvel Comics and original art will be part of Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, held September 12-15. For further details, visit their official website.
