As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for royal fashion and family dynamics, I find myself intrigued by the latest development in the Royal Family – Prince William‘s return to stubble. This decision, while seemingly trivial, has sparked quite a conversation, given the controversial history between royals and facial hair.
1. After growing back his beard, Prince William’s decision has sparked some intrigue given the contentious past between royals and facial hair. On August 11th, an unexpected video featuring Kate Middleton and Prince William was released, where numerous celebrities offered their congratulations to Team Great Britain as the 2024 Paris Olympics came to a close.
The video offered an uncommon view of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during Kate’s cancer therapy and their vacation from their royal responsibilities. In the footage, Kate wore a black and white striped top, while William had a blue t-shirt and grew a beard.
William is usually bald-faced, largely because of his service in the Royal Air Force where facial hair isn’t allowed. However, an unexpected beard graced him in 2008, during their annual Christmas Day church visit as a family. Conversely, Prince Harry has sported a beard for quite some time now; he first showed it off publicly during a 2013 charity trek to the South Pole with Walking with the Wounded.
In his autobiography “Spare,” Prince Harry disclosed that maintaining a beard had led to friction with his brother. Prior to marrying Meghan Markle in 2018, Harry petitioned his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, to allow him to grow a beard for their wedding ceremony.
In his memoir, Prince Harry explained that he felt it was important for his wife, Meghan, not to see him dressed as a total stranger on their wedding day, since scruffs (beards) are prohibited in the British Army and he was to be wed in his traditional armed forces uniform.
Despite his granny having come to terms with the situation, Prince William found himself agitated and told his younger brother to trim his facial hair. When Harry inquired about why their grandmother’s decision affected him so much, William explained that he felt upset because he wasn’t allowed to maintain his own beard.
Harry described that upon Willy’s [Prince William] return from a Special Forces mission, he was instructed to keep a clean-shaven appearance, being told to be “well-behaved.” This directive reportedly left him displeased since it was a privilege he had not been granted. Harry penned this in his book.
Lately, when The Prince of Wales grew a beard again after 12 years, it sparked conversations about the royal family’s past attitudes towards beards. Moreover, an Olympic greeting video showcased Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, and others.
