Prince William Explains Why He Delayed Proposing to Kate Middleton: ‘You Can’t Escape’

I must admit, Prince William’s approach to proposing to Kate Middleton was nothing short of admirable. He took his time, ensuring she fully grasped the complexities and challenges that come with joining the Royal Family. It was like he was giving her a sneak peek into an episode of “The Crown” before deciding whether or not to binge-watch the entire series!

Prince William delayed proposing to Kate Middleton, preferring to take his time. He didn’t want to hastily enter marriage because he wanted her to comprehend thoroughly the responsibilities and public attention that come with being part of the British Royal Family. To ensure clarity, he made certain she had a comprehensive understanding of what it meant to be a royal before agreeing to marry him.

In 2010, the person who would eventually become King of England announced his engagement to Catherine Middleton, and they got married the following year in 2011. During an interview with Tom Bradby for the BBC, William shared that he decided it was the perfect time for an engagement once he gave Kate a good look at the ups and downs of being in the public eye.

Bradby, who is no stranger to the limelight, said to the Prince of Wales: “This is a life in the public domain to a degree that you can’t escape. You both know that—you obviously know it better than Kate does. You are, understandably, very protective of her.”

Reflecting on Prince Harry’s recent marriage to Meghan Markle, it’s evident that becoming part of the British Royal Family is hardly a traditional fairy tale ending. William made it clear that he was keen to protect not only his new bride but also her family, understanding the difficulties they would encounter once their engagement grabbed national attention.

He said to Bradby, “I want to make sure they have the best guidance and the chance to see what life has been like—or what life is like—in the family. That’s kind of almost why I have been waiting this long.”

William pondered deeply on Kate’s sentiments regarding their marriage, understanding the immense burden of being part of the Royal Family that she would have to bear. He desired for her to preview the entire experience, allowing her to make a well-informed choice—whether to plunge in fully or opt out.

William expressed that he wanted to offer her an opportunity to explore and step back if necessary, before things became overwhelming. He is attempting to apply lessons from his past experiences, and simply wished to provide her with the optimal chance to acclimate and discover what lies ahead.

Back in 2011, I was fortunate enough to witness the momentous union of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The entire world tuned in to catch a glimpse of their grand wedding, making it an unforgettable global event that I was honored to be part of.
