As a lifestyle expert, I find myself sharing some news about Prince Harry’s recent decision to step down from his role at Sentebale, the charitable organization he co-founded. This move comes in response to allegations of “misogynoir” and leadership disagreements that have been swirling around. Dr. Sophie Chandauka, the chairwoman of the organization, has publicly stated that systemic prejudice and governance issues played a significant role in the resignation not only of Harry but also of the trustees. This controversy has ignited discussions about power dynamics within the charity, shedding light on important issues that need to be addressed.
Dr. Sophie Chandauka asserted that her time as chairwoman was filled with instances of inadequate leadership, slack administration, misuse of authority, intimidation, harassment, sexism, and anti-Black feminism. In a statement to The London Times, she identified herself as a whistleblower who brought these problems to light, causing friction within the organization.
Moya Bailey’s term “misogynoir” describes discrimination against Black women. Chandauka alleges that Prince Harry and the board have neglected her attempts to uphold the organization’s values. Moreover, she asserted that the charity functions more like a personal endeavor for Harry, co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, and the trustees.
It’s said that disputes started following Chandauka taking up her position in July 2023. The controversy arose when she decided to relocate fundraising activities to Africa, which seemed to stir tension among the trustees. As a result, there were demands for her resignation. However, she chose not to comply and instead opted to file a lawsuit against Sentebale at England’s High Court.
Moreover, a video dating back to April 2024 emerged, depicting Meghan Markle seemingly requesting that Chandauka avoid standing beside Prince Harry at a charitable function. This only served to intensify the rumors suggesting tension within their circle.
On Wednesday, the dispute came to a head when Princes Harry and Seeiso stepped down from their roles, explaining they were left with no other option. In a shared statement, they conveyed their sorrow over the deterioration of relationships between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board. They maintained that the trustees had acted in Sentebale’s best interest by asking Chandauka to resign, while she countered by filing a lawsuit to keep her position.
In 2006, Princes Harry and Seeiso established the charity Sentebale. This was in honor of their departed mothers – Princess Diana and Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso – who both tragically passed away. Though they’ve stepped down from active roles, they have reaffirmed their dedication to Sentebale’s mission and pledged to voice their concerns to the Charity Commission. Although no longer serving as patrons, they continue to be the founders of Sentebale and remain steadfast in supporting its cause.
