Originally, Prince Harry strongly desired to retaliate against U.K. tabloids due to decades of illegal infringement on privacy. However, in a surprising twist, the Duke of Sussex decided to settle his lawsuit against The Sun, a newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch, before the trial even started.
Harry alleged that News Group Newspapers (NGN) illegally obtained information through their journalists and private investigators. On January 22, they resolved the dispute by coming to an agreement at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
Previously, numerous individuals who had sued NGN over claims of illegal phone tapping and other illicit monitoring activities reached settlements with the newspaper. However, unlike most others, The Prince and one more claimant chose not to drop their allegations or come to a settlement during that period.
Initially set for January 21, the official trial was postponed by a day owing to negotiations for a resolution, which Harry ultimately participated in. After reaching an agreement, there was a press release about this development from the media outlet to People Magazine.
They extended a sincere and clear apology to the Duke, acknowledging their significant violation of his privacy and the unscrupulous actions taken by private detectives during their time in the U.K., as they targeted the Duke and Duchess.
In a statement, NGN admitted to compensating Harry for significant damages inflicted upon him. They expressed regret for illegal phone tapping, unauthorized surveillance, and misuse of private data. The publication house also asked for forgiveness for any negative influence their relentless media coverage may have had on the Duke and his late mother Princess Diana’s lives.
The statement expressed regret for causing distress to the Duke, as well as damaging relationships, friendships, and family ties, and agreed to compensate him significantly. In the interest of both parties and their financial well-being, a spokesperson for the media company stated that they chose to resolve this matter.
