Prince Harry Says ‘It’s Still Dangerous’ To Bring Meghan To The U.K. As Intense Tabloid Scrutiny Continues

As a dedicated follower of the British royal family, I have watched with great interest the tumultuous journey of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. The Duke of Sussex’s recent interview for the documentary Tabloids on Trial in the U.K. has once again brought their plight to the forefront, revealing the lengths they are willing to go to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their family.

Prince Harry refuses to risk his family’s safety merely for the chance to live in his home country.

In an ITV interview for the documentary Tabloids on Trial, which was broadcasted in the U.K. on July 25, the Duke of Sussex warned that it is still risky for his wife to return to his native country due to the harsh tabloid coverage of them. He shared his fears, stating, “One disgruntled reader could misinterpret the media content and take harmful actions against my wife. Such threats, be it from a knife or acid, are matters of real concern for me. This is one reason why I have decided not to bring my wife to this country.”

To clarify, Markle and Harry relocated to California in the year 2020 following their decision to give up their royal duties. Harry frequently returns to Britain, but Markle has scarcely been back since then, with her last visit being for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral which took place in 2022.

Prince Harry won’t bring his family back to the U.K. — He explains why!

With rumors swirling about the Sussexes looking for a new home in the U.K., Harry shared with ITV on Thursday that returning to England with his family might not be feasible unless they can ensure their safety there.

The prince holds the view that sharing remarks about his family results in harsh criticism from the media, putting his family’s security in greater jeopardy.

Harry explained that he sued Mirror Group Newspapers as a last resort. He felt caught in an impossible situation where he was criticized no matter what he did. However, he believed that given his unique perspective and position, he was best equipped to handle the situation.

Last year, a London High Court judge found in favor of Prince Harry against the publishing company, determining that it was probable they had hacked into Harry’s phone to some degree between 2006 and 2011. The two parties reached a settlement this year, with the publisher conceding to pay for Harry’s legal fees and damages, in addition to providing him an initial payment of over £385,000 for infringing upon his privacy, as stated by his lawyer David Sherborne.

Differing stances on media scrutiny deepened the royal rift

Prince Harry’s disputes with the British tabloids not only strained his connections with the media, but also impacted his relationship with his father, King Charles III, and brother Prince William. In an interview with ITV, he expressed that the royal family’s failure to protect them from intrusive press is a significant factor in their rift. “I have made it clear that this is something that needs addressing; it would be great if we could do it as a united front.”

He added, “For me, the mission continues, but yes, it’s caused part of the rift.”

The Duke shared in the documentary that he and his late grandmother, the Queen, had frequent discussions about this matter while she was still alive. He expressed that she wholeheartedly endorsed this endeavor, stating, “She understood how important it was to me. I can almost hear her saying, ‘Finish what you’ve started.'”
