Prime Video has cast Ryan Hurst – best known for his role as Opie in Sons of Anarchy – as Kratos in its upcoming God of War series. Interestingly, Hurst previously played Thor in the God of War: Ragnarök video game, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance. The series is confirmed for two seasons and is already in pre-production in Canada. Frederick E.O. Toye, who has worked on shows like Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes.
Kratos was born a Spartan warrior and possesses the power of a god. He grew up in a society focused on combat and quickly became a skilled commander, leading armies for Sparta. However, he made a dangerous pact with the Greek God of War, Ares, trading his soul for victory. Throughout a hugely popular series of ten games, Kratos defeated countless enemies – humans, monsters, and even gods – becoming a well-known figure in popular culture.
The upcoming live-action God of War series will largely retell the stories of the most recent games, focusing on Kratos and his son, Atreus. Their relationship—a central theme in the games—will be the heart of the show. The series follows Kratos and Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of their loved ones, Faye. Kratos aims to train Atreus to be a strong god, while Atreus tries to help his father reconnect with his humanity. The series is being developed by Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on popular shows like Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, For All Mankind, and numerous Star Trek projects. God of War is expected to premiere on Prime Video around 2027.
