Prime Video Debuts 2025’s Must-Watch Sci-Fi Horror Hit

The sci-fi horror film Companion is now streaming on Prime Video as of October 18th. It’s the first film directed by Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script. The movie stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple hoping for a peaceful weekend escape with friends, but their getaway takes place at a secluded cabin.

Things get really interesting – and a little weird – when we find out one of the people at this gathering isn’t a person at all, but a super-realistic robot! It’s a really fun mix of suspense, cool tech, and some surprisingly dark humor, and it totally throws everything into chaos. As a movie lover, I was hooked!

The creators of the hit film Barbarian—Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, and J. D. Lifshitz—brought us Companion, starring Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend. Released in U.S. cinemas by Warner Bros. Pictures on January 31st, the film made $36.7 million at the box office on a budget of just $10 million.

The film follows Iris as she struggles to survive a terrifying night after a disturbing experience with Sergey at a remote cabin. She faces danger from both people and advanced technology. /Film critic Chris Evangelista gave the movie a nine out of ten score, calling it “the first great film of 2025” and particularly praising the acting of Thatcher and Quaid.

Kevin Maher from The Times rated the movie three out of five stars, describing it as a “robot girlfriend” film that starts off very promisingly.

The film received mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of critics gave it a thumbs up, averaging 7.5 out of 10 stars. The site summarized the film as a clever and thrilling story that successfully blends dark twists with a seemingly normal family life.

I’ve been looking at the scores, and overall, this movie seems to be hitting the mark with both critics and audiences. Metacritic gave it a 70, which generally means ‘favorable’ reviews – not a slam dunk, but definitely positive. And audiences seem to agree! They gave it a B+ CinemaScore and a solid four out of five stars from PostTrak, so it’s safe to say most people are enjoying it.

However, not all reviews were positive. Benjamin Lee, writing for The Guardian, gave the film a two-out-of-five-star rating, finding it visually polished but lacking in depth and ultimately unsatisfying. Jesse Hassenger of The A.V. Club awarded it a C+, criticizing the film’s commentary on relationships as feeling forced and derivative of other works.

Companion is getting a lot of buzz as one of the best science fiction movies of 2025, thanks to its blend of thrilling suspense, futuristic setting, and thought-provoking look at artificial intelligence.
