As a fan of classic platformers, I pledged my support for Yooka-Laylee on Kickstarter when it was first announced. The idea of a game that served as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie really resonated with me. However, when the game eventually launched, Yooka-Laylee seemed overly similar to its predecessor, embodying both its strengths and weaknesses. This close resemblance made it seem like Yooka-Laylee lacked a unique identity; it was more like Banjo-Kazooie with a fresh coat of paint rather than a distinct game in its own right.
In Yooka-Replaylee, the story has been significantly revamped, not just figuratively but also literally. It’s undergone a major transformation, featuring a new plot, fresh abilities, smoother progression, and a trimming of elements from the genre that were excessive in the original version, making it more reminiscent of its inspiration. There are fewer items to gather now, but the ones you do find carry greater significance.
The major enhancement in Yooka-Laylee’s gameplay lies in the versatility of movement and actions for the duo, Yooka and Laylee. From the start, they have a wider range of skills at their disposal compared to the original game, bypassing the gradual acquisition of abilities and making them feel more fully-fledged from the outset. The platforming has been significantly refined, surpassing the capabilities of the original, even after all its updates, offering an exhilarating gaming experience. Yooka’s jumps and falls have a satisfying heft without being cumbersome, further improving the gameplay.
The alterations in the story are highly appreciated. The version I’ve been using โ currently live on Steam โ is merely the initial part of the game, halting just before allowing me to enter the first distinct world, yet it already demonstrates considerable advancements. The backstory of the two characters has been expanded substantially, and surprisingly, the narrative now moves faster. Previously, Yooka-Laylee suffered from slow, tedious dialogue that was overloaded at the start, but despite the initial load of exposition remaining, it’s drastically reduced without sacrificing any charm or essential story details. Most of it is still present; it’s just been reorganized in a more streamlined, efficient manner that doesn’t prolong your engagement unnecessarily.
As a gamer, I must say this game looks spectacular! The graphics are stunningly beautiful, and the unique visual style really sets it apart. However, running it on my PC wasn’t always smooth sailing โ keeping a steady 60fps at higher settings was quite a struggle, even in 1080p. But hey, there could be multiple factors at play here, and it’s still a while until the official launch. I have no doubt that when it finally drops, this game is going to be a visual marvel, and console gamers are surely in for a treat too!
What makes Yooka-Replaylee so aggravating is that it renders the original game obsolete. Everything about it โ from its enhancements to its streamlined and polished features โ makes Yooka-Replaylee the superior edition of the game, to the point where there’s no incentive to revisit the original once you’ve tried this version. It’s simply better in every respect, I can’t fathom why anyone would want to go back to the original after experiencing this improved take on the game.
