As a result, Arkham Asylum shut down due to lack of criminally insane patients, except for one – the infamous Joker. He was transferred to Blackgate instead.

Indeed, Ledger’s character was left alone in the now-shuttered Arkham Asylum, and after that point, his destiny becomes a mystery.
