The film titled “Predator: Badlands” gave fans a sneak peek of its initial 15 minutes during San Diego Comic-Con, and let me tell you, this opening sequence was anything but timid. We at TopMob were fortunate enough to catch an early glimpse, so here’s a rundown of what unfolded.
In “Predator: Badlands,” the title character, typically portrayed as an antagonist, takes center stage for the first time. The opening 15 minutes establish this unique angle. We’re introduced to a desolate, predatory world where larger beings feed on smaller ones, with the Predator emerging as the most terrifying. The narrative then delves into the inner thoughts of our Predator protagonist, emphasizing that a Yautja is an ally to no one and a hunter to all. This direct insight into the Predator’s mind effectively immerses viewers in the world of “Predator: Badlands.
Following this, our protagonist-like figure is introduced in the film ‘Predator: Badland’, named Predator Dek. Dek is noticeably smaller compared to his brother Kwei, another Predator we encounter within the first 15 minutes of the movie. Initially, Kwei appears to be harsh towards Dek, labeling him as weak and not capable enough to face him. However, it gradually becomes apparent that Kwei’s behavior is aimed at molding Dek into a formidable Predator warrior. He intends to teach Dek combat skills in the Predator world.
In a remarkable showdown deep inside a cavern, the two combatants clash in an extraordinarily intense battle that resembles a legendary duel. Kwei mercilessly teaches Dek a harsh lesson in fighting, yet avoids causing him any genuine harm. This action-packed scene is both thrilling and thought-provoking, as it portrays Predator battling another Predator. It also serves as a heartwarming moment, demonstrating the deep bond between the two characters.
“You wage war with fury,” Kwei tells Dek, “I fight with the discipline of a father.” Fighting with the wisdom and control of a father is an admirable goal. This inspires Dek to strive harder to demonstrate his strength and make his brother feel proud.
The opening scene of Predator: Badlands provides a deep understanding of the Predator’s societal norms. It recalls an instance where Kwei shielded Dek, and subsequently, the film reveals the process by which a Predator joins their group. This entails selecting a prey and transporting it to their planet in a ceremonial manner. Utilizing advanced spacecraft technology, they survey potential prey, and driven by ambition, Dek selects indestructible Kalsik from Gemma, a deadly world. Kwei is alarmed, pleading with him not to, but Dek declares that if he’s the weakest, he must vanquish the strongest.
Their argument comes to an end when their father shows up. He informs them that Kwei was supposed to assassinate Dek while he slept, as the only way for Predators to gain honor is through death. However, Kwei loves Dek and refuses to carry out the deed, even when their father traps Dek and commands him to do so. Instead, Kwei captures Dek and locks him inside their spaceship. Their father, predictably, reacts poorly and attacks Kwei with his blade, forcing Dek to witness the brutal murder of his friend. In the end, their father sends Dek to Gemma regardless. What a nice man.
1) It’s clear that Dek will stop at nothing to eliminate the Kalsik, given his fierce determination. The opening sequence of “Predator: Badlands” immerses us in the Predator’s world, evoking a powerful sense of empathy for him and his brother’s demise. We eagerly anticipate experiencing the entirety of “Predator: Badlands” when it hits theaters on November 7.
