‘Predator: Badlands’ Breaks One of the Most Important Franchise Records

The new Predator: Badlands movie from 20th Century Studios is doing well in theaters and could have one of the biggest opening weekends of any film in the Predator series.

The movie made about $15.6 million on Friday, counting early previews, and is expected to earn around $37 million for its opening weekend – almost a record! This is better than predicted, as experts originally thought it would make closer to $25 million.

Viewers loved the movie too! Predator: Badlands earned an A- CinemaScore, which is the best audience rating any Predator film has ever received.

The latest installment in the series is performing well, following previous films that each received a B+ grade. Audience feedback, tracked by Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak, is very positive, with 78% of viewers saying they’d recommend it and a large number giving it the highest possible rating.

Dan Trachtenberg, who directed, produced, and wrote the project, along with producers Ben Rosenblatt and John Davis, seem to have pleased fans with their approach.

Positive buzz from viewers has kept the film gaining popularity, helping it perform better than other big summer releases like Tron: Ares. At San Diego Comic-Con, the movie excited fans with its impressive action sequences, including a demonstration of the main character, Dek’s, unique ability.

This latest film in the series is notable for portraying the Predator as the main character and aiming for a wider audience with a PG-13 rating. While it didn’t significantly attract younger viewers, it successfully kept its existing fanbase. The audience was primarily men over 25, making up 57% (compared to 45% in the previous film), with women over 25 consistently representing 22%. The film also drew a diverse crowd, comprised of 44% Caucasian, 26% Latino or Hispanic, 15% Black, and 8% Asian American viewers.

Even though the movie was rated PG-13, very few viewers—only 5%—were between the ages of 13 and 17, meaning the rating change didn’t significantly attract a younger audience. Its success seems to be due to new stories, effective marketing, and the unique approach of the ‘Badlands’ concept, when compared to previous films like 2010’s Predators and 2018’s The Predator.

I’m really impressed with how well Predator: Badlands is doing. It just shows that if a movie is genuinely good and people start talking about it, it can really stand out, even when a lot of other films are being released at the same time. It’s a great sign for the franchise!
