As a long-time movie buff and follower of DC Extended Universe (DCEU), I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy at the news that Joe Manganiello will not be returning as Deathstroke in the upcoming Deathstroke and Bane film. For years, I have watched with bated breath as the story of Slade Wilson unfolded, only to be tantalizingly halted time and again.
My journey with Deathstroke began during the early days of DCEU, when it was announced that Manganiello would don the iconic costume and wield the sword of a character I had long admired in the comic books. The prospect of seeing Deathstroke on the big screen was exhilarating, and I eagerly anticipated his appearance in Justice League.

Lately, news emerged in September about Matthew Orton, the writer of “Captain America: Brave New World,” being hired by DC Studios to script a movie starring Deathstroke and Bane. Sparking curiosity, whispers began that this could potentially be a secret adaptation of “The Secret Six.” Meanwhile, James Gunn has been subtly hinting at future roles for Deathstroke in the upcoming DC Universe, fueling anticipation among fans who hope to see Joe Manganiello reprise his role.
Contrary to previous speculations, it appears that Joe Manganiello will not reprise his role as Deathstroke. Instead, the studio is on the hunt for a fresh face to portray Deathstroke in the upcoming Deathstroke and Bane team-up film: “Joe Manganiello is definitively not returning as Deathstroke; they are currently seeking an actor to play the role of Deathstroke in the Deathstroke/Bane movie.
This news dashes dreams that Manganiello may at last delve deeply into a character he’s long been eager to develop.
As a movie enthusiast who’s seen it all, let me share my thoughts on Joe Manganiello’s role as Deathstroke in the DCEU. Although his screen time was limited to a post-credits scene in “Justice League” and some Knightmare sequences directed by Zack Snyder, it’s clear that he yearns for more. Yet, given his ties to the former DCEU, it seems challenging for him to be part of the revamped DC Universe.
Previously, in February, Manganiello stated that his journey with Deathstroke appeared to be finished. He disclosed that James Gunn had suggested he should leave the role behind, despite the fact that DC Comics executive Jim Lee expressed interest in transforming Manganiello’s unused Deathstroke movie script into a graphic novel.
In the end, Manganiello chose not to participate since he couldn’t promise his involvement if the project took off in Hollywood. Given that a new beginning is unfolding at DC Studios, it appears that Manganiello’s tenure as Deathstroke has indeed concluded for good.
