20 hours before his demise, Pope Francis posted a heartfelt message on Twitter to commemorate Easter Sunday. His last tweet stated: “Christ has risen! These words embody the entire purpose of our existence, as we were not designed for death but for life. #Easter” – Pope Francis (@Pontifex).
In spite of persistent health challenges, the 88-year-old Pope made a short visit to St. Peter’s Square, using a wheelchair as reported by The Mirror. Addressing the crowd, he offered a warm Easter greeting: “Dear brothers and sisters, I wish you a Happy Easter!” The remainder of his ‘Urbi et Orbi’ address was later officially released, in which he expressed: “Jesus is not in the grave; He is alive! Love has conquered hatred, light has defeated darkness, and truth has triumphed over deception.
Pope Francis emphasized peace in his final address, particularly focusing on areas still grappling with prolonged conflicts such as Palestine, Ukraine, Yemen, and the tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He expressed worry over violence in other places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Myanmar, which has recently experienced an earthquake.
He emphasized the significance of religious freedom, free thought, and open expression, asserting that they are essential components for enduring peace. In a similar vein, he expressed his wish for the war-torn Ukraine to receive the Easter gift of peace from the resurrected Christ, encouraging actions towards a fair and lasting solution, while advocating for building a just peace.
On Easter Sunday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance had a short encounter with Pope Francis. Their discussion lasted roughly 15 minutes. During the meeting, Vance expressed gratitude for the audience, acknowledging the Pope’s recent health concerns but expressing joy to see him in better spirits. In return, the Pope presented Vance with a collection of rosary beads, a tie featuring the Vatican crest, and three Kinder Surprise eggs as treats for his kids.
Later on, Vance posted a heartfelt tribute: “I’ve just heard about Pope Francis passing away. My sympathies are with the countless Christians worldwide who cherished him deeply.” He further mentioned that it was a joy to meet him the day before, despite his evident illness.
At 7:30 a.m. on Easter Monday, the Pope sadly passed away. The specific reason for his death is currently undisclosed, though it came after a five-week hospitalization due to double pneumonia. The Vatican announced that he had opted to rest on Saturday, and instead of meeting with Vance earlier in the day, he delegated Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher to represent him in discussions.
