Similar to most Pokémon games, Pokémon Legends: Z-A lets you begin your adventure by choosing one of three starter Pokémon: Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig. Since your chosen Pokémon will likely be your companion throughout the game in Lumiose, it’s a good idea to pick carefully!
Choosing your first Pokémon can be tough – they’re all adorable and grow incredibly strong! If you’re struggling to decide, we’ve created this guide to the starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A to help you make this important decision at the beginning of your adventure.
Best starter Pokémon in Legends ZA
Overall, your best bet for a starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is Chikorita.
Chikorita often gets overlooked as a starter Pokémon, and its evolved form, Meganium, hasn’t traditionally been very strong. However, in Legends: Z-A, Chikorita has become a surprisingly powerful and reliable choice that can carry you through the whole game.
There are several reasons why Chikorita is a strong choice. Its Grass typing is particularly useful at the beginning of the game because many early Pokémon are weak to Grass-type attacks – think Water, Rock, and Ground types. Plus, Chikorita and its evolved forms learn strong Fairy-type moves, have naturally high defense, and can learn helpful support moves like Light Screen, Reflect, and Safeguard, giving you extra options in tough situations.
What really makes Chikorita stand out is its wide range of moves that restore its health. These include powerful options like Giga Drain, which damages opponents while healing itself, Synthesis, which provides pure healing, and Leech Seed, which gradually drains HP from enemies. While these moves are useful in any Pokémon game, the fast-paced combat in Legends: Z-A makes them especially effective.
In battle, items have cooldowns, meaning you can’t use them constantly. Therefore, it’s best not to waste them on simply restoring HP. Focus on using healing moves from Pokémon like Meganium, and save your items for more crucial situations like reviving fainted Pokémon or curing status conditions.
Okay, so if Chikorita doesn’t quite grab you, I’d say Tepig is the way to go. Honestly, Fire-types are kinda hard to find early on, so starting with one feels really smart. Totodile is good too, and you can definitely beat the game with it, but Water Pokémon are *everywhere*. If you really want a Water-type, you’ll find a better one pretty quickly anyway, so Tepig just feels like the most unique and helpful choice to me.
