Pokémon Legends Z-A: Where to get a Metal Coat

Okay, so I’m really hyped for Pokémon Legends: Z-A! It’s packed with awesome and weird Pokémon, and getting some of them to evolve is seriously different than anything I’ve seen before. You’ve got the usual stuff like Evolution Stones, trading with friends… but get this, one Pokémon *actually* evolves if you flip your Switch upside down! It’s wild, and I can’t wait to try it.

A classic way to evolve certain Pokémon is by trading them while they’re holding a Metal Coat. This works for Pokémon like Scyther, which evolves into Scizor, and Onix, which becomes Steelix – both of whom can achieve Mega Evolution in Legends: Z-A. However, finding a Metal Coat to trigger these evolutions can be surprisingly difficult.

This guide will tell you how to find a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but keep in mind that it won’t be available to you right away – you’ll need to progress quite a bit in the game first.

Metal Coat location – Legends ZA

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you can find a Metal Coat in four different ways, but they all become available quite late in the game. Only one of these methods is accessible before you finish the main story.

You won’t be able to get a Metal Coat until later in the game, through a side quest called Steadfast as Steel (Side Mission #101). This quest becomes available after you get the main story quest to reach Rank A in the Z-A Royale. To start it, find and talk to a Rust Syndicate member on Bleu Street.

In this mission, you’ll battle a trainer who uses Steel-type Pokémon – including Steelix, Scizor, Mawile, and Excadrill. If you win, you’ll receive a Metal Coat as a reward.

You can get another Metal Coat by completing the post-game quest “A Feather From Skarmory.” This quest sends you to the challenging Wild Zone 17 to search for a feather blade dropped by a Skarmory. Bring the feather blade back to the quest giver, and you’ll receive a Metal Coat as a reward.

You can also get Metal Coats by playing Reward Matches in the Infinite Z-A Royale, but they’re rare.

After you’ve beaten the game, you can get a Metal Coat by going to Racine Construction and talking to the man on the left inside the warehouse – he’s near Canari’s room. He sells it for 4980 Poké Dollars.

Metal Coats aren’t dropped by Pokémon or found lying on the ground. You can’t obtain them through normal exploration of the game world.

Can you catch Scizor or Steelix in the wild? – Legends ZA

Scizor and Steelix aren’t found wandering in the wild, and they don’t appear as special Alpha Pokémon either. However, you can encounter an Alpha Steelix during the main story, specifically in Quest #40, ‘The One That Gives.’ Be aware that this Steelix only appears once – defeating it means it won’t respawn.

Okay, so aside from getting lucky with that one special event, if I really want a Scizor or Steelix, I basically need to trade with a friend after finding a Metal Coat. It’s a bit of a process, but totally worth it to get one of those awesome Pokémon!
