Despite a change in ownership, one constant remains for Pokémon GO: Its annual anniversary art is still scrutinized by fans for potential hints about future content. Predicting the future from this artwork has had varying success; while some depicted elements have come true in the following months, others remain unexplored. Patiently waiting, Mega Mewtwo, patiently waiting.
No matter how precise it turns out, there’s much to discuss about the artwork for the 9th anniversary. We’ll start with what’s already been confirmed: Quaxly is getting a Community Day, and Aegislash is making its debut later this month. Both characters are depicted in the artwork, hinting at their upcoming appearances in just a few weeks.
For the remaining part, things are less clear-cut. Mega Metagross and Gigantamax Butterfree join the roster together with Paradox Pokémon Iron Treads and Great Tusk from Scarlet & Violet. Each one of these four would be a great addition to the game, particularly Mega Metagross, which has been eagerly awaited since many other Mega Evolutions have emerged in recent times.
There’s also Zygarde, not directly linked to its 9th anniversary. Could this suggest a forthcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A and a related Pokémon GO event? Alternatively, since the Kalos Tour is expected to be one of the major events next year, it might just mean that instead.
What’s particularly intriguing is the scene where the trainer looks at their smartwatch and gives a thumbs-up sign, suggested in a speech bubble. While some believe this might be related to an emote system in raid lobbies, an equally enticing theory is that it could indicate the long-awaited arrival of remote trades in the game. The thumbs-up gesture could imply the approval or acceptance of a trade proposal.
Once again, take all this with a grain of salt — art’s meaning is up to the beholder.
