Gaming enthusiasts are now focusing on Sony’s upcoming major console – the PlayStation 6. Although there has been much conjecture regarding its launch date, a former Sony executive named Shuhei Yoshida hints that it may not be unveiled until as late as 2028.
Yoshida, who worked for 38 years at Sony and spent 31 of those years with PlayStation, discussed console cycles in a conversation with GamesBeat. He pointed out that Sony typically launched a new console every five to six years, but this interval has gradually grown longer.
The PlayStation 4 was released in 2013, and although a more advanced version, the PS4 Pro, hit the market in 2016, the next major upgrade, the PlayStation 5, didn’t arrive until 2020 – seven years later. If Sony maintains this timeline, we might expect the PlayStation 6 around 2027. However, Yoshida believes that such a release could be premature.
Yoshida stated that due to production problems stemming from the pandemic-caused chip shortages, the PS5 era has been delayed. However, he personally feels that a 2028 launch date for the PS5 seems appropriate. Intriguingly, rumors hint that Microsoft’s next console might also release in 2028, indicating that these gaming titans could potentially share the same schedule.
Yoshida also voiced his thoughts on the gaming industry’s current difficulties, which involve job losses and decreased growth following the pandemic surge. He referred to it as an “exaggerated response to the COVID-19 situation,” stating, “Companies, including ours, invested too heavily. Consequently, we had to confront the facts and make necessary modifications.
Over the 2024 holiday season, the PlayStation 5 sold an impressive 9.5 million units, pushing its total sales past 75 million. On the other hand, the Xbox Series X/S has managed to sell approximately 28.3 million units, but it’s been experiencing minimal growth.
As a die-hard gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but fuel the buzz surrounding the next generation. A recent leak hints that the design for the PlayStation 6’s chip is almost finalized, potentially indicating a 2027 launch date. Whispers in the gaming community even propose that Sony might be developing two versions of the PS6 – one being the traditional console and another rumored to be either a handheld device or an economical alternative.
It’s still unofficial, but it seems evident that the PlayStation 6 is approaching, so gaming enthusiasts will keep a keen eye out for any fresh news.
