Now, Planet Labs (PL +9.60%), a concern dealing in rather fascinating pictures of the Earth from a most advantageous height, experienced a bit of a jump this morning – a solid 7.2% by midday, if you please. A most agreeable uptick, naturally, though precisely why remains a bit of a puzzle. No pronouncements from the company itself, no bullish whispers from the City gentlemen, nothing of the sort. A dashedly curious state of affairs, wouldn’t you agree?
The nearest thing to an explanation comes from KeyBanc, where a fellow named Leshock suggests a buying spree in defence stocks. His theory, you see, is that this little disagreement in the Persian Gulf might drag on a bit – possibly even involve chaps on the ground, which would be a frightful nuisance for everyone concerned.
What KeyBanc Says About Iran
Leshock observes, as the first week of this rather unpleasantness draws to a close, that a certain number of drones have been employed, and a replacement order will be necessary. Perfectly sensible, of course. But it’s the other need, the one Leshock overlooked, that strikes me as the real driver of Planet Labs’ good fortune.
You see, damaging enemy installations – and in this case, Iran’s command centres and missile launching pads – is all very well, but assessing the damage afterwards requires a bit of visual confirmation. And that, my dear fellow, is where Planet Labs steps in, looking rather splendid. With a constellation of approximately 200 Earth-observing satellites, providing multiple peeks at the planet each day, they offer pictures of a clarity that would make a photographer weep with envy.
Indeed, all week long, the news reports have been liberally sprinkled with images courtesy of Planet Labs. A most advantageous position to be in, wouldn’t you say?
Is Planet Labs Stock a Buy?
Secretary of Defence Hegseth, a man who clearly knows a thing or two about these matters, suggests this little conflict might last anywhere from four to eight weeks. Eight weeks, you understand, is a full quarter of heightened demand for Planet Labs’ services. A most agreeable prospect for a company in the picture-taking business.
One can’t help but imagine this will translate into a rather handsome revenue bump for the space stock. The stock price bump, as we’ve already observed, is already well underway. A spot of good fortune, indeed, and a perfectly sound investment, if you ask me.
