Pixar’s Upcoming Animated Film ‘Elio’ to Push Genre and Ratings Boundaries with Sci-Fi and Horror References, Director Says

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has been through countless cinematic journeys, I can confidently say that the upcoming Pixar release, “Elio,” is shaping up to be an exhilarating ride. The sequel to the 2015 hit, “Inside Out 2,” has set a high bar this year, and it seems that Pixar is aiming to maintain this momentum with “Elio.

Following nine years, Pixar unveiled the long-awaited sequel to their 2015 Academy Award-winning film, Inside Out. Titled Inside Out 2, it marked Pixar’s sole release in 2024 and undeniably became a blockbuster sensation. Grossing an impressive $1.698 billion, the movie seized the number one spot on this year’s box office and is poised to retain its title as the highest-grossing film of 2024.

Presently, following a challenging period, it appears that Pixar intends to persist along the trajectory established by the sequel of “Inside Out,” and they are optimistic that their upcoming production titled “Elio” will emulate the success of the same. Scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, “Elio” happens to be Pixar’s sole production for the year 2025, which aligns with the timing of the original release of “Inside Out 2,” making the recipe for success quite evident.

In a recent chat, one of the film’s directors, Madeline Sharafian, who has worked on movies like Coco and Turning Red, shared insights about Elio. She mentioned that the upcoming movie could diverge significantly from previous Pixar productions, potentially challenging genre and rating norms when it hits theaters next year.

Next year, we can expect the film titled Elio to be unveiled, adhering to the release pattern established by Inside Out 2. The studio anticipates replicating the remarkable success achieved by this year’s blockbuster hit with this release.

The upcoming movie is being directed by a three-person team: Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian (making her feature directorial debut), and Adrian Molina. Produced by Mary Alice Drumm, its official summary offers the following information:

Elio is a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.

As a gamer immersed in the world of this upcoming movie, I’ll be thrilled to see Yonas Kibreab bring Elio Solis to life, with Jameela Jamil portraying Ambassador Questa, Brad Garrett bringing his charm as Lord Grigon, Zoe Saldaña playing Olga Solis, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, and Shirley Henderson adding a unique touch to the character OOOOO.

The premiere is yet to arrive, and there’s still much we don’t know about this film, but in a recent chat with Empire, Madeline Sharafian hinted that the upcoming movie titled Elio will challenge Pixar norms by exploring new genres and potentially higher ratings.

[Elio has] some sci-fi horror references. It’s one of our best surprises, so I don’t want to give away too much. I’m always trying to push it to be weirder and a little creepier, to ride that line of the PG movie.
