Piers Morgan Calls Out Saturday Night Live Audience for Applauding Colin Jost’s Luigi Mangione Joke: ‘Shameful Moment’

As someone who has spent years working in journalism and witnessing the senseless glorification of violence in media, I find the recent jokes made by Saturday Night Live‘s Colin Jost and Michael Che about Luigi Mangione to be utterly distasteful and irresponsible.

Recently, Piers Morgan has spoken out against Saturday Night Live, specifically their audience and Weekend Update host Colin Jost, for making jokes about Luigi Mangione, a UnitedHealthcare CEO who is under investigation for murder. Even though Mangione’s Ivy League background and manifesto have sparked discussions, Morgan finds the joke by Jost to be distasteful and insensitive.

As host Colin Jost brought up Mangione’s name, the crowd erupted in applause, making Jost appear uneasy. In an attempt to redirect the response, he jokingly commented, “You’re cheering for justice, aren’t you?” His tone, however, held a touch of irony.

Morgan expressed his disapproval on social media platforms, branding the incident as unsuitable and accusing Jost of not treating the matter with sufficient gravity. On X (previously known as Twitter), he penned, “Absolutely appalling… and Colin Jost merely smirks, acting like it’s all a joke. A regrettable moment for SNL.

Jokingly, Jost commented that Luigi Mangione abandoned his battle for extradition, resulting in a flight from Pennsylvania to New York where he now faces numerous accusations. In other news, it seems Bumble has experienced some sort of explosion.

Jennifer Sey criticized the SNL audience for inaccurately portraying Mangione as a hero, instead of condemning his actions. She described them as misinformed individuals who were glorifying his behavior and creating a distorted narrative. In her writing on X, she labeled the SNL audience as “a group of unintelligent, pitiful conformists who blindly follow woke ideologies.

During a segment discussing Sean Combs (also known as Diddy) being imprisoned following sexual assault accusations, co-host Michael Che joked, “It’s been announced that Luigi Mangione will share a federal prison with Sean Combs. In response, Combs said, ‘My Christmas has come early.’

Since his arrest, Mangione has garnered considerable media spotlight, primarily due to his manifesto criticizing healthcare industry policies. It’s not the first time SNL has mentioned him; in fact, during a previous Weekend Update segment on December 15, Jost made a joke about the ongoing sensitive discussion regarding who might portray Mangione in a Netflix miniseries.

Previously, cast member Sarah Sherman voiced her astonishment over the unusual fascination towards Luigi Mangione, finding it intriguing that various individuals were attracted to him. Currently, Mangione remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
