Philadelphia’s Gritty Is Becoming a Marvel Villain

The much-loved mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers, Gritty, has surprisingly found himself in Marvel Comics, not as a hero but as a villain! In issue #2 of All-New Venom, penned by Al Ewing and illustrated by Carlos Gómez, the fluffy orange figure teams up with the Death-Throws, an eccentric gang of juggling miscreants.

In the Marvel Universe, Gritty makes his entrance with a challenging encounter against the freshly revamped Venom, adding an unexpected twist to his initial comic book appearance.

In New York City, Death-Throws are conducting tryouts for new recruits. Among the aspiring candidates, one unique individual catches the eye – a vibrant orange character donning a Philadelphia jersey and carrying a cheesesteak. This character strongly resembles Gritty, sparking speculation as to whether it is the genuine article, a distant kin, or simply someone dressed up in a costume.

Despite previous appearances by Gritty within Marvel comics, this instance solidifies his status as a permanent character in the Marvel universe. Renowned for his eccentric behavior and internet sensation status, Gritty aligns perfectly with the Death-Throws’ circus theme because of his own proficiency in juggling and various other tricks.

Transforming the NHL mascot into a comic book villain might seem unusual, but considering Marvel’s history with quirky characters, it makes perfect sense. Be it if Gritty continues with the Death-Throws or ventures into new journeys, his debut in Marvel comics presents an array of possibilities.

Keep an eye out for All-New Venom #2, hitting shelves on January 8, 2025, to see Gritty in action.
