Update: New first-look images of Peter Dinklage as the Toxic Avenger have been released.
The aim was to preserve the essence of Lloyd’s initial Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen monster, while incorporating elements reminiscent of the Toxic Crusaders cartoon’s aesthetics. Simultaneously, we wanted to introduce something fresh, bizarre, and endearing with Toxie’s design. That’s what Macon Blair shared with EW.com, praising Millenium FX for their work – a blend of human, mutant, and unquestionable affection.
Previous from January 31st:
According to the information provided, it appears that Cineverse has been identified as the “Toxic Hero” that a toxic world requires.
The exciting update about the Peter Dinklage film version of “The Toxic Avenger,” which was postponed last summer, is it will now have a scheduled theatrical release date.
Release info
On August 29, 2025, the movie ‘The Toxic Avenger’ will have a wide release without any ratings restrictions, marking the start of the Labor Day weekend.
In this transaction, Cineverse (the company that owns Bloody Disgusting), known for distributing the successful film “Terrifier” 3, has obtained the U.S. and Canadian rights for theatrical screenings, home entertainment, and streaming of “The Toxic Avenger,” following an agreement with Legendary Entertainment, as reported by Deadline.
What happened?
Last summer, the remake of “The Toxic Avenger” was temporarily put on hold due to whispers that it wouldn’t be suitable for release. Yet, those who caught glimpses of the movie at various horror film festivals have been praising it. Currently, with 25 reviews, the movie boasts a remarkable 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the feedback from critics, it appears that the remake of The Toxic Avenger wholeheartedly embraces its outlandishness, offering a bloody, exaggerated, and thoroughly enjoyable watch. Many reviewers commend Peter Dinklage’s commitment, appreciate the film’s practical effects, and admire how it seamlessly combines absurd humor with an unexpectedly emotional heart. It has been observed that fans of the original Troma film and those who appreciate unconventional, quirky cinema should find its unrestrained, chaotic entertainment appealing.
Peter Dinklage wanted a release
Back in July of last year, Dinklage stated he still hoped it would get a release:
I’m not involved in its production, but I don’t know much about it. However, given that it was a massive success at Fantastic Fest in Austin, I really hope it gets a wider release. The writer and director, Macon Blair, who is also known for his work in ‘The Thicket’, is simply amazing – he’s one of my favorite people and artists. So, fingers crossed for it to shine brightly under the spotlight.
What is The Toxic Avenger about?
The previously released official synopsis offers:
In a fresh take on the beloved character, filmmaker Macon Blair revives the legendary mop-wielding vigilante in the movie titled The Toxic Avenger. This production by Legendary Entertainment is a modern adaptation of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 comedy-action smash hit, originally conceived by genre pioneer, Lloyd Kaufman.
The narrative revolves around Winston Gooze, an ordinary janitor struggling to make ends meet, who undergoes a terrible toxic accident that metamorphoses him into a new breed of hero: THE TOXIC AVENGER! Equipped with superhuman strength and using a glowing mop as his unique weapon, he embarks on a mission against time to rescue his son and thwart a merciless corporate tycoon who seeks to exploit toxic powers for his own power-hungry agenda, expanding his polluted domain.
Who stars?
Gathering a star-studded ensemble praised by both critics and audiences, this cast boasts Emmy, Critics Choice, Independent Spirit, BAFTA, and SAG award winners such as Peter Dinklage from “Game of Thrones” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, Jacob Tremblay known for “Room” and “Luca”, Taylour Paige famous for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Zola”, Julia Davis who shone in “Sally4Ever”, “Nighty Night”, and “Run Rabbit Run”, Jonny Coyne recognized from “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, Elijah Wood, a veteran of “The Lord of the Rings” series and “Yellowjackets”, and Kevin Bacon, remembered for “City on A Hill” and “Footloose”.
Behind the movie
In this version, we can say: Blair was the one who both wrote the script and directed the movie, inspired by Lloyd Kaufman’s “The Toxic Avenger” (1984). The production of the film is credited to Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Lloyd Kaufman, and Michael Herz. Additionally, Andrew Pfeffer, Jay Ashenfelter, and Macon Blair serve as executive producers. Mark Bennett and Julie Harkin were in charge of casting for the movie.
Behind the scenes, collaborators working with director Blair include Dana Gonzalez, an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer; production designer Alexander Cameron; editors Brett W. Bachman and James Thomas; visual effects supervisor Chris Ritvo; costume designer Vanessa Porter; and musical duo Will Blair and Brooke Blair.
“A Toxic World Deserves a Toxic Hero,” states the info.
