So, Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, has really amplified the speculation around David Ellison’s potential move for Warner Bros. Discovery. It seems like a lot of people are starting to believe that if Ellison takes over, we could see some pretty big changes in both the political landscape and the media world – it’s definitely something I’m keeping an eye on as a film and media enthusiast!
During a press conference at the Pentagon on Friday, Hegseth criticized CNN’s coverage of the Strait of Hormuz and then made a notable statement: he believes CNN would improve if David Ellison became its leader.
Hegseth targets CNN through Paramount
A CNN report released on Thursday stated that the Pentagon and the National Security Council didn’t accurately predict how likely Iran was to block the Strait of Hormuz.
That is when Hegseth brought up Ellison directly.
He dismissed the report as completely absurd, pointing out that Iran has a long history of threatening ships in the Strait of Hormuz – a tactic he says they consistently use to hold the waterway hostage. He criticized CNN for seemingly not recognizing this pattern, calling their report unserious and expressing hope that David Ellison will soon take over the network.

Why David Ellison’s name matters here
Hegseth was talking about the proposed $110 billion deal where Paramount Skydance aims to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that owns CNN.
Oracle’s Larry Ellison is closely connected to President Trump’s former administration, and the acquisition still needs official clearance. However, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, has suggested the agency is likely to approve the deal.
Hegseth didn’t just mention Ellison’s name casually; he directly linked his criticism of CNN to the expected transfer of control to Ellison, which Paramount anticipates will be complete by year’s end.

Fits with the previous Paramount MAGA reporting
This confirms what we reported last November: the new partnership between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t seem to fit with James Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe.
Under its new leadership, Paramount is indicating it will focus on content appealing to a broader, more mainstream American audience, with themes centered around patriotism and traditional values.
The report highlighted an article in Variety that discussed the company’s shift in focus – moving away from trends popular with a limited, coastal audience and aiming to appeal to a wider, more general audience.
Another outlet at the time also described the shift as potentially MAGA-friendly.
