Pennywise isn’t scary in a typical way, and that’s actually a good thing! Throughout the season of Welcome to Derry, he’s been mischievous and playful, even before we really saw him – not until episode 5, that is. Even then, seeing his frightening form while acting like a show-off on a pole was surprisingly funny. By the end of episode seven, Pennywise is really causing trouble, and he pays a frightening visit to Will Hanlon. It’s definitely a chilling scene, but a behind-the-scenes clip of Pennywise wearing a hoodie makes the whole thing feel a bit lighter and more fun.
The episode ends with Will home alone when he receives a phone call. He initially believes it’s Ronnie Grogan, who begins describing the discovery of Rich’s body. However, her voice changes and the conversation becomes frightening. Will realizes it’s actually the clown calling, and he’s understandably terrified—especially since Pennywise is right behind him, attacking him with the deadlight.
A behind-the-scenes clip offers a look at how a scene from Welcome to Derry was filmed, featuring the three actors. Amanda Christine, who plays Ronnie, and Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise/IT) are shown recording their dialogue together, with a microphone positioned above them. On the other side of the screen, Blake Cameron James (Will) films his part using a phone. The clip culminates in Skarsgård playfully jumping towards James and the camera, prompting a chuckle and a “cut!” from the director.
One of the most amusing things about this clip is seeing Pennywise in a simple grey hoodie. It’s strange to see Bill Skarsgård in full clown makeup and doing the Pennywise voice while wearing something so everyday. I suppose even he needs a break from the full costume! It’s always interesting to get a glimpse behind the scenes of a show like Welcome to Derry, especially one as visually striking as this.
