We anticipated a confrontation in IT: Welcome to Derry, but nothing prepared us for how intense it would be. For the first five episodes, a creepy feeling of Pennywise’s presence has hung over the characters, like a red balloon floating nearby. With all the frightening events and unsettling hints, it was only a matter of time before the clown made his move. Finally, the fifth episode took us into the terrifying tunnels for our first real encounter with Pennywise, and he was truly frightening.
Lilly, Rich, Ronnie, and Will are stunned when they find Matty hiding at their usual hangout. He tells them he managed to escape from tunnels where a clown had been holding him captive for months. Though skeptical, the kids mostly believe him, and Ronnie urges him to go to the police. Matty refuses, explaining he’d rather risk living with the clown than return to his abusive home. He also reveals that Phil is still alive, prompting the group – now including a new friend named Marge – to team up and rescue him.
Hanlon, along with members of the military and a hesitant Taniel, venture into the tunnels to find the pillars and attempt to control the entity within. (What a terrible idea!) Taniel starts with the protection of an ancient weapon from the ship, but he loses it while escaping the military. Ironically, this turns out to be lucky for Lilly, as things quickly go awry. Matty guides them deep into the tunnels, where they tragically discover the bodies of their three friends… and Matty himself.

As Matty begins to transform into Pennywise, he starts singing a disturbing song. The children, already frightened, find that even taking calming pills isn’t enough, and they run away. Pennywise chases after them and traps Lilly, mocking her for leading her friends into a dangerous situation. He nearly bites her with his sharp teeth, but a weapon intervenes, stopping him. Lilly grabs the weapon and likely uses it to escape the tunnels, though we don’t see her get away.
Will almost died when his father, believing him to be a hallucination, targeted him. Leroy was about to shoot Will, but Pauly bravely intervened, taking the bullet and tragically dying. The children were horrified as they watched, then followed a devastated Leroy, who was carrying Pauly’s body, as he left the tunnels.
With Pennywise now appearing in Welcome to Derry, we’re eager to find out how the story ends. The final episodes of the first season have a lot in store, so join us next week for more of the thrilling action!
