The fifth and last season of the show “You” marked the conclusion of Penn Badgley‘s portrayal of Joe Goldberg. This character is often seen as one of the most disliked in television history. Interestingly, even though he played the role so well, Badgley himself doesn’t seem to be a fan of his on-screen persona as the psychotic serial killer Joe Goldberg.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Badgley was questioned about whether he kept any mementos from the set after the show ended, reminiscent of the “keepsakes” that his character Joe collected from his romantic interests – a box filled with personal items he’d secretly taken from the women he had been obsessing over.
He replied, “I appreciate your mention of trinkets. Teeth, and I suppose I should also bring up the other item beginning with T.” He seemed hesitant, perhaps referring to some unsettling items his character possessed. Later, the Gossip Girl actor disclosed one of the mementos he retained from the show.
He admitted, “I held onto a single pair of track pants. To be honest, that’s all I saved, as I don’t intend to continue resembling him any further than I currently do. After all, I can’t stand my current image.
In addition to portraying a serial killer, Joe Goldberg’s character in the show is also a book lover, often surrounded by books throughout the series. Badgley, the actor, retained some of the books that were left on set during each season.
The actor disclosed that the production team plans to crowd the stage with numerous vintage and well-read books, some of which are true gems, they mentioned. In the suspenseful television series, Joe is portrayed as a captivating yet perilous character who will go to great lengths to intertwine himself with the lives of those he’s infatuated with, as outlined in the summary.
In the fifth season, the main character reestablishes himself in New York City, embracing his true identity instead of concealing it with aliases, as he did during seasons 2 through 4. Yet, the specters of his previous misdeeds eventually track him down.
You season five is now streaming on Netflix.
