Penguin Producer Reveals the Batman Movie ‘Vibrates Against’ the Upcoming Show; Deets Inside

As a hardcore Batman fan who’s been through the highs and lows of Gotham City’s chaotic criminal underworld for decades, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming “The Penguin” series! The fact that it’s a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ The Batman is just the icing on the cake.

In a recent conversation with SFX magazine, producer Dylan Clark discussed how The Penguin series connects to Matt Reeves’ The Batman film. Contrary to what one might think, you don’t need to watch The Batman to enjoy this show, as Clark emphasized.

He made it clear that while the show and movie share a connection, they are distinct entities since Reeves describes their interaction as being like things that “vibrate off” one another. Although each production impacts the other, they can both be appreciated individually.

Clark made it clear that it’s not necessary to have previously read ‘The Batman’ to appreciate ‘The Penguin’. With its distinct plotlines and character growth, this series caters to a broad spectrum of audiences, including those unfamiliar with ‘The Batman’.

The spin-off story kicks off as Gotham grapples with the aftermath of the Riddler’s Flood, not much time having passed since the occurrences depicted in The Batman. Oz Cobb, portrayed by Colin Farrell, aims to seize control over Gotham’s criminal realm while chaos reigns supreme.

As a fervent admirer of Matt Reeves’ creative genius, I can’t help but share the exhilaration that’s coursing through me after hearing about his visionary approach to the upcoming series. In an exclusive chat with SFX, he painted a gripping picture, likening it to Scarface in the realm of gangster stories.

In the forthcoming movie, he considers ambition as a key narrative element. Reeves elaborated that during his presentation to the network, he emphasized the importance of delving deeply into the Penguin’s character—exploring the motivations behind his relentless pursuit of power and the personal emptiness that fuels this compulsion.

Network executives have been intrigued by the concept of a TV series showcasing the rise to power of a penguin, and they are eager to proceed with its production. This new show, titled “The Penguin,” is set to debut on HBO on September 19, and will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW the following day. For more information, check out the latest issue of SFX magazine, which hits stands starting Wednesday, September 4.
