On October 18th, actors Pedro Pascal and Kerry Washington joined protests across the US for No Kings Day, a national event focused on defending free speech and voicing opposition to policies enacted by President Donald Trump.
Protests took place across the country, from Los Angeles to New York City, as the movement that started in June gained momentum and attracted celebrity support from figures like Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Mark Ruffalo.
Pascal joined a march in Los Angeles and shared photos on Instagram with the message, “PROTECT #Democracy.” Washington similarly posted pictures and a video from a protest, expressing “so much love and gratitude to everyone” who took part.

Several other actors also showed their support. Murray Bartlett, known from *The White Lotus*, shared a photo of himself wearing a custom “No Kings” hat and wrote about the importance of coming together peacefully to fight for everyone’s rights. Cecily Strong posted videos from a protest in Massachusetts, playfully teasing her fellow demonstrators. Billy Eichner, meanwhile, shared footage from a New York march, describing it as a peaceful demonstration against intimidation and extremism.
Actor John Cusack joined a protest in Chicago and told CNN that Donald Trump’s idea of turning the city into a center for fascism wouldn’t happen. Meanwhile, Bill Nye spoke out in Washington, D.C., calling the president childish and criticizing those around him for being overly supportive.
Event organizers explained that the gathering is focused on safeguarding democracy and opposing what they consider an abuse of power. They drew a parallel to the time of King George III and the American Revolution. According to Mr. Dunn, a leader of the group No Kings, they are working to get elected officials to oppose what they see as President Trump exceeding his authority, with the ultimate goal of removing him from office and restoring democracy before it’s too late.
The protests are supported by a large and diverse coalition of over 200 national and thousands of local groups. This includes well-known organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union, the Service Employees International Union, and the American Federation of Teachers, as well as progressive groups such as Indivisible, 50501, and MoveOn, all of whom have been central to the movement.
Staying peaceful is central to the protests. Organizers teach people how to calm tense situations, and the group’s website offers advice on how to keep demonstrations peaceful.
