Peacemaker‘s second season had a major surprise in episode six. General Rick Flagg Sr. reached out to Lex Luthor for assistance. He needed to find Christopher Smith’s secret portal to other dimensions and correctly guessed that Nicholas Hoult’s villain would be able to help with the search. In episode seven, we saw this help unfold as Flagg had to collaborate with another character originally from Superman. This was one of two unexpected appearances from the DC Universe in the episode, and although neither is as significant as Luthor’s, Flagg discovered another criminal he could use to his advantage. However, like Luthor, this new “helper” doesn’t seem trustworthy.
In “Like a Keith in the Night,” Lex Luthor received assistance not from a machine, but from a person. He instructed the director of A.R.G.U.S. to contact Sydney Happersen, a former LuthorCorp employee, to locate the lost portal. Happersen, described as an “MIT super genius” (played by Stephen Blackehart) and the one who “literally wrote the book on dimensional interconnectivity,” was a key scientist working for Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman. He was also largely responsible for nearly causing global destruction with a massive rift. Though Happersen believed he should-and wished to-seal the tear in reality, he didn’t act when his supervisor reprimanded him.
In Peacemaker, we learned that Happersen’s devotion to Luthor – which Flagg pointed out led Happersen to risk everything – continued even after Luthor was jailed. Happersen attempted to bargain for a lighter sentence by offering his assistance. When Flagg refused and threatened to tell Luthor that his follower had failed him, the scientist quickly agreed. (It’s worth noting that Luthor, who was self-centered, hadn’t requested any mercy or favors for his dedicated supporter.) Flagg observed that Happersen instantly complied when he was frightened. He then went to the seized communications center he’d operated from during Superman. Using it, Happersen quickly located Peacemaker’s hidden portal in Washington state.
That tear in space was much more stable than any LuthorCorp had created before. Their rifts always had a slight instability – a “wobble.” They would begin to gather unwanted matter from other dimensions – what we called “dimensional detritus” – and eventually collapse. We witnessed this firsthand when Mister Terrific attempted to maintain a portal for an extended period. It wasn’t long before it failed.
So, the incredibly intelligent Happersen – who’s a bit of a follower of Lex Luthor – has actually built a functioning, stable version. This likely isn’t a good thing.
So, before Happersen can even think about helping Luthor again, it looks like Rick Flagg Sr. has other plans – he wants to get Happersen working for the US government! Flagg was really impressed with how quickly Happersen worked and even hinted at keeping him around, saying, “I may keep you around.” Honestly, as a fan, the scientist seemed pretty happy to hear that – I think he definitely liked the sound of it!
There’s one person Flagg doesn’t want sticking around – another DCU cameo appearance. That’s because this person now only exists in an alternate, Nazi-controlled world. Peacemaker star Lochlyn Munro returned as the parallel universe version of Detective Larry Fitzgibbon. The character was killed off during the show’s first season when a Butterfly took control of his body.
However, Fitzgibbon didn’t die during his appearance in season two. And given that the show hinted at the possibility of a determined Keith following his imposter brother back to his home dimension, we really can’t dismiss the chance that this alternate version of Larry Fitzgibbon might eventually arrive in the DCU’s primary world as well.
If he does, he could end up looking into the leader of A.R.G.U.S.. He’s particularly interested in why Flagg shared information with Lex Luthor’s most devoted and obedient follower about building stable multidimensional portals – portals that don’t fluctuate or collapse. Specifically, he wants to know the reasoning behind this exchange.
So, for those who stayed through the credits, it’s likely better if detectives across all realities don’t question why Flagg allowed Happersen to use the internet after locating the rifts.
