PEACEMAKER Season 2 Eagly Scene Continues James Gunn’s Love of Unruly Pets

We’ve been fond of Eagly, the faithful eagle companion of Peacemaker, since the very first season. Although he had some notable scenes in the initial season, it wasn’t until the second episode of season two that he truly stole the spotlight. This happened when he brutally took down a gang of highly skilled A.R.G.U.S. agents who were trespassing on his master’s property. With just his sharp talons, beak, and wings, one feisty bird managed to send numerous individuals to the hospital. Notably, his fierce actions stemmed from an abundance of loyalty and affection towards his owner, Christopher Smith, aka the Peacemaker (played by John Cena). So, how did we arrive at the point where Eagly unleashes this carnage in episode two?

Due to Christopher Smith murdering Rick Flag’s son in “The Suicide Squad,” surveillance teams have been monitoring him for months. Upon discovering a Quantum Unfolding Chamber leading to 99 other dimensions at his home, agent Langston Fleury sends a team of soldiers to search the premises while he’s out socializing with friends. The team consists of four well-trained agents, each given degrading nicknames such as “Cupie Doll,” “Encino Man,” and “Titties.” However, they didn’t anticipate Peacemaker’s loyal pet eagle, Eagly, who showed no mercy during the search.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, when I (Eagly) bust in on those intruders attempting to break into my master’s CUF, I slip out from the shadows and launch an attack. Despite their attempts to take me down with gunfire, I dodge the bullets and make a beeline straight towards them, raking their faces with my claws and pecking at them ferociously. First, I knock out “Cupie,” leaving him sprawled out on the floor, unconscious. Then, I pounce on one of the agents, known as “Encino Man,” and literally pluck an eye right out of his socket. With a quick thrust of my beak, I also strike another agent in the neck, leaving behind the weapon once wielded by Langston Fleury. Although I don’t resort to lethal force, I leave one agent battling for life in the ICU, another with a missing eye, and yet another in need of extensive reconstructive facial surgery. After successfully defending my master’s home, I strut around triumphantly, setting the stage to the tune of “Dirty Money” by Ida Maria.

James Gunn seems to have a fondness for depicting humorous situations involving animals and people, as seen in his work like making Krypto attack Nicholas Hoult (as Lex Luthor) in Superman. This affection might stem from his personal rescue dog, Ozu. However, if Eagly and Krypto were to meet, it’s unlikely they would get along, according to Gunn. He mentioned that Eagly dislikes almost everyone except for Chris. Additionally, the possibility of Streaky the Supercat causing chaos in the DCU keeps us on edge, as suggested by Gunn’s work.

Peacemaker season two premieres new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
