I was surprised to see Peacemaker finally showing up on the Nielsen streaming charts, but honestly, it’s not the kind of success James Gunn was probably hoping for. It’s… complicated.
Peacemaker Barely Scrapes Onto the Chart
It wasn’t until all of Season 2 was released, and Nielsen had tracked viewership of both seasons, that Peacemaker finally appeared in the ratings.
During the week the season finale of Peacemaker was released (October 6th–12th), the show reached number 10 on Nielsen’s chart for original series, with viewers watching a total of 398 million minutes.
That’s the lowest position on the chart.
A Weak Week Helped Peacemaker Slip In
It’s worth noting that Peacemaker wouldn’t have appeared on the chart in any other week this season. It only made the list because viewership for other shows was particularly low that week – Gen V, for example, dropped off completely – creating space at the bottom for it.
Typically, a show like Peacemaker wouldn’t stand out. However, during stronger weeks of the year, the tenth most popular show easily reaches 400–500 million viewing minutes, making its current performance even more remarkable.
Follows Season 2’s Declining Viewership
The late Nielsen appearance lines up with the viewership problems already reported:
- Season 2 finale: 435k households
- Season 1 finale: 584k households
- Season 2 premiere → finale: nearly 40% drop
None of the episodes from Season 2 appeared on the Nielsen charts when they originally aired, despite efforts by Gunn to promote the season as a continuation of the Superman story.
Gunn Already Confirmed No Season 3
James Gunn has confirmed that there won’t be a third season of Peacemaker, and the show’s viewership numbers don’t suggest it would have been renewed anyway.
Despite adding a multiverse element and connections to the larger DC Universe, the show just couldn’t keep viewers engaged.
With Superman not performing as well as hoped and Peacemaker having trouble attracting viewers, concerns are increasing about the future of James Gunn’s DC Universe plans. Creature Commandos also didn’t gain much traction in terms of viewership.
