Payal Kapadia, Halle Berry and More Join 2025 Cannes Jury: Here’s Everything We Know So Far

For the upcoming 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the complete lineup for the main competition jury has been revealed. Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leïla Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, Carlos Reygadas, and Jeremy Strong will be joining Jury President Juliette Binoche as part of this esteemed panel. The festival is set to take place from May 13th through May 24th.

The panel of judges will determine the recipient of the esteemed Palme d’Or, along with a number of other prominent accolades such as the Grand Prix, Jury Prize, and distinctions for outstanding direction, acting in both female and male categories.

Halle Berry, who became the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for Monster’s Ball (2002), boasts a long career that spans both high-profile blockbusters and indie films. Her recent projects encompass John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, set for release in 2024 as Never Let Go, where she also served as co-producer. In 2020, Berry stepped into the director’s chair with Bruised, marking her debut as a filmmaker.

Last year at Cannes, Indian filmmaker Kapadia made history by receiving the Grand Prix for “All We Imagine As Light,” marking the end of a 30-year gap for Indian films in competition. This project took shape during her residency at La Cinéfondation in 2019.

Italian actress Alessandra Rohrwacher is often seen at Cannes film festival, frequently teaming up with her sister Alice Rohrwacher, a director, on movies like “The Wonders” and “Happy as Lazzaro”. Both films garnered significant awards at major festivals. Additionally, she has collaborated with well-known directors such as Luca Guadagnino and Matteo Garrone.

Moroccan author Slimani, renowned particularly for her novel Lullaby, earns literary recognition within the group. Meanwhile, Congolese director Hamadi, who previously showcased Downstream in the 2020 Official Selection, is currently developing the series Milimo, Wandering Souls of Kinshasa.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but gush over the extraordinary South Korean auteur, Hong Sangsoo. Time and again, he’s graced the prestigious Cannes Film Festival with his masterpieces, such as Tale of Cinema and The Day After, which have been in the running for top honors at the festival.

Mexican filmmaker Reygadas was honored with the Caméra d’Or Special Prize for his film “Japon,” and later received accolades at Cannes for “Silent Light” and “Post Tenebras Lux.”

In a more conversational style, it could be: Mexican director Reygadas got the special Caméra d’Or Award for his movie Japon, and since then he’s won awards at Cannes for Silent Light and Post Tenebras Lux.

Jeremy Strong, an acclaimed American actor, is set to feature in upcoming projects following a stellar year that included roles in The Apprentice and Broadway’s An Enemy of the People, where he received a Tony Award. Known for his Emmy-winning performance as Kendall Roy in Succession, Strong will next be seen in Scott Cooper’s biopic about Bruce Springsteen titled Deliver Me From Nowhere.

In other news, Robert De Niro is set to receive a special Palme d’Or award, while French actor Laurent Lafitte will be the master of ceremonies for both the opening and closing events.
