Pauly Shore Remembers Robin Williams’ Stand Up Was ‘Just Another Level’; Says ‘ The Guy Was Special’

As a child growing up amidst the hallowed grounds of The Comedy Store, I was blessed with an unparalleled front-row seat to the magical world of comedy. My mother, Mitzi Shore, a trailblazing woman who owned one of the few comedy clubs in the country, nurtured and guided some of the greatest comedians our world has ever seen – including the legendary Robin Williams.

Pauly Shore, a well-known comedian and actor from the ’90s, recently paid tribute to Robin Williams, a comic legend who was part of his childhood. When he was young, Shore often watched Williams perform at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, where his mother owned it. In a recent conversation, Shore shared memories of how Williams’ performances created lasting impressions not just on him but also many others.

For many years, The Comedy Store was frequented by Williams, who passed away a decade ago at the age of sixty-three. Notable comedians like Richard Pryor, David Letterman, and Sam Kinison, among others, also often performed there. Being raised near the club provided Shore with a unique opportunity to closely observe these brilliant comedians up close.

Shore recollected that Williams’ stand-up performance was extraordinary, even out of this universe. In his words, “He was something exceptional.” He added, “His ability to improvise and weave it into stand-up comedy was on a different plane.” There seemed to be no bounds to the humor Williams could create from any situation. Shore reminisced about one occasion when Williams would grab drinks from the audience and spin jokes for ten minutes straight using them. When Williams was performing, everyone would gather in the back to watch, he added.

At The Comedy Store, not just Williams but also Shore and his family had the opportunity to mingle with some of the most prominent comedians in the industry. Mitzi, Shore’s mother, was a unique figure, being one of the few women in the country who owned a comedy club. Known for her harsh critiques yet nurturing spirit, she was often referred to as a den mother for these comedians. Struggling comedy pioneers frequently found solace with Mitzi.

Mitzi shared a unique bond with Williams, who was already gaining recognition through his acts at The Comedy Store. Nevertheless, Williams continued to visit the Shore residence weekly to pick up his modest $25 payment. What stands out most in Shore’s memory, though, is that Williams often dropped by in costume as Mork from Mork & Mindy, even when he wasn’t performing – a testament to his ongoing enjoyment of playfulness. As Shore put it, “He was always the same entertaining fellow, both on and off stage. Just incredibly playful and laid-back.”

Furthermore, Shore pointed out that despite Williams’ immense popularity, he continued to be warm and considerate towards others. In his words, “He would always give me a hug, ask about my mom and brothers whenever we met.” Shore believed that Williams’ genuine concern for people left a lasting impression on everyone around him.

Mitzi Shore, who passed away in 2018, significantly impacted numerous comedians’ lives by treating them not just as entertainers, but as family members. She stood by their side during their most challenging times. While Williams’ needs may not have been as extensive as some other comedians, he maintained a deep-rooted and respectful bond with Mitzi.

Shore also discussed Williams’ wider influence beyond comedy. He noted that in films such as Good Morning, Vietnam among many others, Williams brought to his acting the same genuine emotion that characterized his stand-up performances. he always put his heart into it,” said Shore. “That came through with who he was as a person as well.”

Ten years after his passing, the heartfelt reactions revealed just how profoundly people still held Williams in their hearts. His influence on both fans and fellow comedians, evident even now, underscores the lasting impact of his legacy.

Reflecting on Pauly Shore’s thoughts, we gain a deeper understanding of the exceptional talent and genuine character that defined Robin Williams. His performances, brimming with humor and heartfelt moments, continue to captivate us. In addition, his warm interactions filled with affection toward others make him an enduring favorite. Even those fortunate enough to have known him personally can sense his lasting impact.
