Known for helming the Resident Evil movie franchise and the sci-fi horror cult classic Event Horizon, Paul W.S. Anderson is venturing into fresh realms with his upcoming work, titled In the Lost Lands. This film blends fantasy and action elements and is based on a 1982 short story penned by George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones.
Anderson labeled the movie as a “mature folktale,” featuring intense “physical brutality” and shocking “frights.” He clarifies that this production diverges significantly from his past works, particularly in its visual style and atmosphere. “This is unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” Anderson states. “I aimed to capture the mythic quality of a fairy tale, so it’s undeniably an R-rated folktale.
The upcoming movie, showcased in the newest edition of SFX Magazine, combines fantasy and action in a manner that Anderson finds appealing to viewers. “The idea was simply fantastic,” he expresses. “It encompasses everything audiences appreciate from George’s work. There are complex characters with intrigue, and unexpected plot twists. This offered an opportunity to expand the Martin universe and provide a taste of something that was both recognizable yet innovative.
Journey through the Forlorn Realms”
Milla Jovovich portrays Gray Alys, a powerful witch embarking on a treacherous expedition, while Dave Bautista assumes the role of Boyce, a skilled hunter. They delve into a hazardous landscape in search of an enigmatic relic for a monarch longing for joy. The film boasts a robust ensemble, with Arly Jover (recognized from her role in “Blade”) as Ash, Amara Okereke as Melange, Fraser James as Patriarch Johan, Simon Lööf as Jerais, and Deirdre Mullins as Mara.
The film underwent an engaging journey to reach the screen. In 2015, German movie maker Constantin Werner secured rights for three of Martin’s short stories, intending to merge them into one production featuring Milla Jovovich as Gray Alys and Justin Chatwin (known for Shameless) as Boyce. Yet, in 2021, Paul W.S. Anderson stepped in as the director, with Werner continuing his role as co-writer and producer.
In a shift from his past projects within the Resident Evil series, Anderson’s choice to undertake this new project undeniably signals a change in direction. Yet, the palpable excitement he exudes for the narrative is evident. The movie appears poised to merge elements of dark fantasy with action and brutality, providing an innovative take on timeless fairy tale motifs.
In “The Lost Lands,” Anderson intends to enchant audiences with a novel perspective on the fantasy genre, offering thrilling action and surprising twists, set against a tapestry of mythology and sorcery. Fans of George R.R. Martin’s works and Anderson’s past films are certain to find intrigue in this mature-rated, whimsical journey through enchantment.
