Upon James Gunn and Peter Safran assuming control over DC Studios, there was much anticipation among fans that Henry Cavill might carry on as Superman in the revamped DC Universe.
Nevertheless, contrary to expectations, Cavill didn’t reprise his role. Before long, Gunn declared his intentions for a different Superman film, one that steered clear of origin stories and instead focused on a youthful iteration of the character. Given this focus, Cavill seemed an unsuitable choice for the part.
Among fans, there’s ongoing discussion about whether Gunn played a part in Cavill’s exit from the role. However, David Corenswet has now been chosen to portray Superman on the big screen. Interestingly, several other actors tried out for this role, including Patrick Schwarzenegger, before Corenswet secured it.
Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed his attempts at superhero roles during an interview with Joshua Horowitz. He mentioned that over the years, he’s only auditioned for a handful of these roles. Among them were the part of Homelander in “The Boys” series, which eventually led to him securing the role of Golden Boy in “Gen V,” a spinoff from “The Boys.” Lastly, Arnold disclosed that he also tried out for James Gunn’s adaptation of Superman.
He was asked whether he got into the costume and the actor admitted that he didn’t:
I didn’t receive any feedback; it seemed more like a “not this time” response. After that, The White Lotus came along immediately.
Schwarzenegger also explained that the audition was self-tape.
In an earlier announcement, Jack Quaid, the actor behind Hughie in ‘The Boys’, disclosed that he too submitted an audition tape. However, his response mirrored that of Schwarzenegger – meaning, it didn’t lead to a role for him at the time.
As a movie enthusiast, I gave it a shot, and so did many others who seemed to fit the role. However, I didn’t progress much in the audition process at all. I submitted my audition tape, but it didn’t lead anywhere, and that’s absolutely okay – it’s just how things go sometimes.
However, it is certain that at least one performer advanced through an audition process and even donned the costume, only to subsequently tear it – a feat accomplished by Tom Brittney.
In simpler terms, it’s true that Henry Cavill wore the real Superman costume. It was a genuine piece of clothing. I’m unsure about the specifics of what rights or information I’ve agreed to share. The process was incredibly demanding. I had previously interacted with James Gunn since I auditioned for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’
