As a gamer with a heart full of rhythm and a soul craving for action, I can barely contain my excitement for Ratatan! Having grown up with the captivating beats of Patapon, it feels like a dream come true to see Hiroyuki Kotani return to the scene. With its blend of rhythm-based gameplay, side-scrolling action, and roguelike elements, this game seems tailor-made for me.
Hey there, it’s me again! Guess who’s back with a new groove? That’s right, Hiroyuki Kotani, the mastermind behind the heartwarming PSP rhythm game Patapon, is stepping onto the stage once more. This time, he’s unveiling a brand-new tune called Ratatan! Expected to drop on PC and other platforms in 2025, this game promises an electrifying blend of rhythm-infused gameplay with side-scrolling action. What’s even sweeter? You can gather up to four friends for some online teamwork fun!
In the game Ratatan, instead of issuing verbal commands, we direct our soldiers by creating rhythmic beats. This helps us overcome adversaries. Every time you play, it provides a different adventure due to its roguelike structure, where power-ups and rewards are randomly assigned each time.
In our world of Ratatan, we have the power to control magical tools that allow us to command our Cobun troops, guiding them to either attack or defend. But that’s just the beginning – each character has their own unique talents that add layers to the musical gameplay. One of the most exciting aspects is the ‘fever mode,’ which kicks in when you nail the rhythm perfectly, intensifying the music and unlocking additional powers.
In the year 2025, the character Ratatan will be making an appearance on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, or PC, as confirmed by the game designer of PATAPON.

In terms of appearance, Ratatan showcases intricate backdrops and a distinct art direction that deviates from Patapon’s minimalistic design. This change hints at an emphasis on action, strategy, and various power-ups. The game received financial backing through a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this month. To deliver seamless multiplayer interactions, the team at Tokyo Virtual Theory has developed the Theory Engine, with the goal of providing a swift and stable platform—essential for a rhythm-based game.
Patapon, released in 2007, created quite a stir with its unique rhythm gameplay. It led to two follow-ups, but since Patapon 3 in 2011, creator Kotani hasn’t spearheaded a significant project. Now, with Ratatan, he’s ready to share that catchy musical fun with a new crop of gamers.
