As a huge fan of found footage horror, I was thrilled to hear Paramount is bringing back Paranormal Activity! And what’s really exciting is how quickly things are moving – it feels like just yesterday they announced the reboot, and now they’ve already got a director! It’s great to see Canadian filmmaker Ian Tuason taking the helm, and even better that James Wan – a master of the genre – is producing. It feels like a promising start for a fresh take on a classic!
These movies are made in a “found footage” style and mostly use sudden scares to try and frighten the audience. Surprisingly, there are already seven films in the series, but I couldn’t tell you anything about any of them after Paranormal Activity 2. It’s difficult to come up with new ideas for the same basic concept, but people keep going to see the sequels anyway. The most recent one, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, was released just in 2021.
We expect the next movie to come out in about a year. Releasing it in 2027 would be a fitting way to mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary. We’ll share more details as we get them in the coming months.
