Paramount Kills Last Ronin TMNT Movie as Sonic Producer Takes Over Reboot

Paramount is making major moves with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is enlisting Neal H. Moritz, the producer of Sonic the Hedgehog, to guide a new live-action/computer-generated movie. This change will affect all future plans for the TMNT franchise.

Paramount Wants a “Sonic-Style” TMNT

As reported by THR’s Borys Kit, Paramount plans to broaden the appeal of its franchises, aiming for a wider audience similar to the success of the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movies, with Moritz playing a key role in this strategy.

It also explains why the long-developed The Last Ronin movie has been sidelined.

Moritz played a key role in making Sonic a major success for Paramount. As one industry source told The Hollywood Reporter, he’s the go-to person when it comes to the Sonic franchise: “If you want Sonic, you go to the guy who did Sonic.”

The Last Ronin Movie Is Off the Table

I was really excited about the potential live-action Last Ronin movie, but unfortunately, it seems like that project has been cancelled. I heard they were even talking to the director of Nobody, Ilya Naishuller, to direct, which felt like a perfect fit, but it just didn’t work out in the end. It’s a shame, as I was really hoping to see that R-rated take on the story come to life.

According to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, the new management at Paramount, led by David Ellison of Skydance, preferred that the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in ten years be suitable for a broader audience and avoid being overly violent or geared towards adults.

The Last Ronin is now “put back in the pizza box,” with no signs it will be revived anytime soon.

Mutant Mayhem Sequel Still Moving Ahead

The report indicates that Paramount is continuing development on a sequel to the animated film Mutant Mayhem, currently scheduled for release on September 17, 2027. Jeff Rowe, who directed the first film, will return as director.

I also just heard that Paramount has canceled the animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
