Paramount has decided not to reprise the cast—including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto—from the ‘Star Trek’ movies that J.J. Abrams directed.
According to Variety, the studio is planning a new “Star Trek” film and won’t be bringing back the actors from the recent movies—Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban. This means they’re starting fresh with a new story and won’t be continuing the timeline that began with the 2009 film.
Paramount is currently undergoing changes and deciding which franchises to focus on, especially with the recent news about James Gunn and the DC Universe. The company’s leaders are prioritizing well-known properties with a solid plan for the future. “Star Trek” fits that bill, but the team behind the recent reboot movies seems to have finished their work.

What Paramount Wants From Star Trek Now
The three “Star Trek” films starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto – “Star Trek” (2009), “Into Darkness,” and “Beyond” – didn’t consistently perform well at the box office. While the first film was a big hit, ticket sales declined with “Beyond.” Plans to continue the series with these actors faced difficulties for several years, including a cancelled movie idea that would have involved time travel and Chris Hemsworth.
Paramount now wants:
- A clean reboot or new timeline
- New cast
- Modern franchise plan focused on theatrical, streaming, and global appeal
This mirrors moves across Hollywood: reset, recast, rebuild.

Star Trek’s Franchise Landscape
Shows like “Strange New Worlds,” “Picard,” “Lower Decks,” and “Discovery” have kept the “Star Trek” universe going. However, Paramount is now focused on reviving the franchise with big-budget movies, rather than just continuing the series on their streaming service, Paramount+.
If Paramount is sold or reorganized, it could also lead to a new creative team and a different approach to making films.
I’m really hopeful that Paramount is finally going to shift away from the direction Kurtzman has been taking Star Trek. I saw a report in Variety that things are moving in a positive direction, and that gives me a lot of optimism for the future of the franchise!
Rumors even offer that William Shatner may be back.
