Paramount is objecting to Netflix’s proposed purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, arguing it likely violates antitrust laws. This week, Paramount voiced these concerns to members of Congress during discussions about the current state of the streaming industry.
In a letter to a House Judiciary subcommittee focused on antitrust issues, Paramount’s top lawyer, Makan Delrahim, stated that a merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery would give Netflix an overwhelming amount of power in the streaming market. He explained that it would “further solidify Netflix’s leading position in streaming.”
He argued that claims the company faces competition from platforms like YouTube and TikTok don’t make sense. He explained that comparing free, user-created videos on those sites to the high-quality, professionally produced content on Netflix or HBO Max is flawed. He called this type of argument “psychedelic antitrust,” meaning it’s disconnected from both how the market actually works and legal principles.
According to Delrahim, Netflix has downplayed the threat from competitors like YouTube in past reports. This news surfaces as Paramount considers making an unwanted takeover offer for Warner Bros. Discovery, following the rejection of their initial proposal.
As a movie and TV fanatic, I was pretty shocked to hear that Netflix is buying up a huge chunk of Warner Bros. Discovery’s studios and streaming services – it’s a massive move! Apparently, they’re also separating out their cable channels into a completely new company. Now, this deal isn’t a done thing yet. It still needs to be checked over by regulators – the Justice Department here, and similar groups in Europe, plus state attorneys general. I’ve seen a lot of chatter about whether Congress can stop it, but from what I understand, they don’t have the direct power to approve or reject the merger, even though they oversee the Justice Department.
