Paradox is working on CK3 performance to support upcoming Asia expansion

2021 is proving to be a thrilling year for fans of Crusader Kings 3, thanks to the highly anticipated All Under Heaven DLC and its significant expansion of the game’s scope. However, this excitement is tempered with some apprehension among players: Although the inclusion of China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia greatly increases the diversity of narratives and campaigns the game can produce, rulers with less powerful computers may find the expanded map more daunting than the arrival of the Black Death or Genghis Khan.

In their recent development update about the expansion, Paradox assures players that they are actively addressing concerns about performance: “As we work diligently on All Under Heaven, we’re simultaneously focusing on enhancing its performance. Our goal is to guarantee that the gameplay experience remains unhindered or diminished by this expansion, and that you can fully and freely enjoy all the new features it brings.

As a gamer, I can confidently say that the team is putting in every ounce of effort they’ve got for this part of the expansion, just like any other piece. Rest assured, there will be a deeper dive into the details later on, in a dedicated developer diary focused solely on this topic.

Beyond touching upon its performance aspects, the recent developer’s diary delved deeply into the geographical landscape of China, discussing various factors such as how map projections can distort the size of certain regions, the criteria used to determine provincial boundaries and names, and why the coastlines and rivers appear as they do, among other details.

In China, you’ll have the opportunity to create your own ruling dynasty and choose its dominant color, mimicking the historical practices of Chinese dynasties. Additionally, Paradox is including characters within the game files that won’t be visible during play – these could potentially be used for introducing a new start date in the future or allowing modders to utilize them.

Crusader Kings 3: All Under Heaven is set to come to PC later in 2025.
